Four teams were tied for the lead with two under par as play began on Monday. The weather and the scores both improved on Monday and when all the results were in, the team of Ted Spengel, Pete Baker, Russ Weyland and Norm Poirier with 11 under par finished in first place, with the team of Carl Schmidt, Rich' Smith, Dick Hester and Ed Ray in second place 10 under. There were three teams tied for third place, those captained by Gary Adams, Jack Phelan, and Paul Overton, all with seven under. There are many new names, but there are many fine young ballplayers. It was the first time that they had enough men to have a full scrimmage. It was a real thrill to watch both teams talking it up with great enthusiasm and confidence, and working for starting positions. McHenry could really be for another well run tour­ nament. Popovich, 7 years old, of 5705 Marietta drive, Crystal Lake, died Tuesday, May 29, in St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, where he was taken for treatment of head injuries after being hit by a semi-trailer truck. The ac­ cident occurred May 22 when he was struck by Gregory D. Winans of Mokena, on Rt. 31 and Orchard lane, near Crystal Lake. The youngster reportedly had just left a school bus on Orchard lane and ran onto the highway from behind a parked car and into the path of the Winans vehicle. The school bus driver was charged with im­ proper operation of a school bus and discharging children on the wrong side of a four-lane road. If you aren't somewhat of an Old Timer in McHenry, you won't remember that "Peggy", with 2-wheel push cart, broom and shovel was the entire street cleaning depart­ ment in McHenry.
