When they celebrated their sifver wedding anniversary last week, it/ took four days before the festivities ended. On Saturday, May 26, a surprise party was held in the couple's honor at the Wonder Lake Legion hall. Friends and relatives shared in the dancing arid kissing and drinking and laughing and it was a good eve ning o£ fun. At the request of Chuck and Theresa Jinga and Joseph and Catherine Omerzo (sisters of the bride of 25 years), the 8 o'clock Mass at Christ the King church on Sunday, May 27, was said in honor of the Mrowkas. And the third day, Monday, was a day with some rest in the ha mmock for Pete, with friends and relatives dropping in after the Memorial Day parade. The Mrowka sons, Tom and Alan, took their folks out for dinner on Tuesday, May 29i com memorating the actual date of the silver anniversary. Congratulations, Pete and Ann. We hope to dance at your fif tieth! READY FOR EXERCISE Getting out last summer's clothes can be a pretty discouraging experience, especially when you find that only one pair of shorts still fits. Move over Jack LaLanne, I'm ready for exercise! COURT HOUSE TOUR Den 3 of Cub Scout Pack 145 toured the jail of the new courthouse in Woodstock on Wednesday, May 30. Although the scouts saw all the modern facilities including the cells, fingerprinting room, kitchen, and T.V. room, they all agreed they wouldn't care to spend the night there. Sheriff Art Tyrrell, who had invited the Wonder Lake Scouts to make this tour, took time to greet the Scouts and say hello. The young jail inspectors were: Doug Maris, Tommy Burrows, Yale Loiacono, Tom Tranberg, and Ricky Corso. Special guests were: Scott Burrows, Jason Warren and Eric Deener. Den mothers for Den 3 are Donna Maris and Audrey Burrows. GREETINGS Belated birthday greetings to Ed Adorjan who resides at 3612 Hilltop. Ed celebrated his birthday on May 27 in the company of relatives and close friends. We don't know how old he is but we* hear he had a really big party last year to celebrate his fortieth. MEMORIAL PARADE With the exception maybe of the sailboat races or Little League games, the biggest attraction in Wonder Lake on Memorial Day is the annual parade. This year the sun even cooperated by poking through the cloucte and shedding a little light on the marchers. Par ticipating in the memorial ceremonies on Monday, May 28, were the Rev. Roger H. Olson, pastor of the Nativity Lutheran church; Commander Jack Beltz of the American Legion Post 1169; Marge Hartung, president of the American Legion Auxiliary; Lois Haak, chairman of the poppy program; Bugler Barry Anderson, a fifth grade student at Harrison school and the son of Judy and Bob Anderson, who did an excellent job of playing taps; Eddie Eberle, son of John and Ann Eberle and his friend, Bill Holp, of Philadelphia, Pa., who represented the U.S. Navy as color bearers; members of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary; the Wonder Lake Bible Church Pioneer Gfrls; Eleven Town Clowns, organized by Kathy Kiddeli; the Wonder Lake volunteer fire department and rescue squad; the fire department auxiliary; Dick's Citgo; the Wonder Lake Hardware, Chris and Judy's Wonder Lounge; the Wonder Lake Women's Club; the Wonder Lake Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies; and last but not least, the very impressive Harrison school concert band under the direction of Richard Mikus and daughter. Following the ceremonies at the Triangle, the children with colorful balloons in hand, made way for the American Legion home and free pop and ice cream, while the parents went down to the Legion hall to the bake sale for some sweet goodies to put on their Memorial day tables. Cal Skinner. Jr.'s assessment reform bills passed the Illinois House last week and another cleared committee. Skinner's bill to require board of review members to pass examinations in counties of over 100,000 population passed 144-0 Monday. The bill also transfers all appointment power from the judiciary to the county board and allows smaller county boards to require the examinations also. Skinner also steered Rep. Tom McMaster's "instant assessment" bill through the House by an overwhelming majority (134-3). "At the present time, owners of new homes don't have to pay taxes on them for as long as 2V2 years after construction. In the meantime, new homeowners are sending children to school, being protected by police, using parks and other local govern mental services." "This bill will require them to pay taxes on their new homes for the proportion of the year that they occupy it. The bill comes about as close as possible to putting property tax collections on a 'pay as you go' basis for new homeowners and will be of great assistance to any rapidly growing area in Illinois," the Crystal Laker said. ^ A third bill received approval of the House Revenue com mittee. It mandates the Department of Local Govern ment Affairs to complete its statistical studies on assessments in a timely fashion. When fully ^im plemented, the DLGA * would have to have its assessment- sales ratio studies to the local supervisor of assessment six months after the end of the year being sfudied. Now the published studies are four years old. "When the Department reaches my schedule, equalization of assessments will be a simple matter for any county board of review and all supervisors of assessments will know how well every township assessor did his or her job before the next year's books are due," Skinner said.
