Jos Senate Passes Construction Bill For 201 Freeway The Illinois Senate has passed legislation sponsored by Senators Karl Berning (R- Deerfield) and Jack Schaffer (R-Cary) to spend $61 million for construction of the Corridor 201 Freeway in Lake and McHenry counties. The freeway would run from the Tri-State tollway at Belvidere road west and north to the Wisconsin state line. The bill is part of a legislative package offered by Senate Republicans to begin con struction of the supplemental freeway system designed under former Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie. The Republican package would cost $621 million compared to a $490 million program proposed by Gov. Daniel A. Walker, and would be paid out of funds available from the highway bond issue and currently in the state road fund. Deep Crust? The earth's crust ranges in thickness from about 4 miles in places under the oceans to about 30 miles under high mountains. Auto Over Manual Automatic transmissions are in stalled in over 90 percent of all 'passenger cars produced in the U.S. DIAL-A-DEVOTION Cal Skinner, Jr., R-Crystal Lakte, urged citizens in McHenry, Kane, Lake and other Illinois counties whose homes and property have been damaged by severe Spring floods to take advantage of a state law giving them the right to apply for property tax relief. "Flood victims should contact their local township assessor or their county supervisor of assessments for relief information1*, he said. Rep. Skinner cited Chapter 120, Paragraph 621.01 of the Illinois Revised Satutes, which states that persons residing in counties that are declared major disaster areas may request property reassessment due to damages caused by floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters. He pointed out that President Nixon, at the request of Governor Walker, as requested by a House Resolution Skinner sponsored has declared forty- seven Illinois counties- including McHenry, Kane, and Lake -major disaster areas, thus qualifying those citizens who suffered property damage for property tax relief. "The property owner who has suffered damages must apply for reassessment with the supervisor of assessments or the board of review in his county in order to be eligible for a tax break", the former McHenry County Treasurer noted..; "The county, with help and advice from the state Depart ment of Local Governmental Affairs, must then make a reassessment. The value of the property is determined as of the date of the disaster declaration, which to flood - ravaged property owners means a lower assessment and lower taxes to pay. "Thus. 1973>eaJ estate taxes, payable in I974>ay*jld be considerably lower for property owners hit by floods this Spring, depending on the extent of damage". CLEAN-UP WEEKS Two weeks have been set aside by the city of McHenry for clean-up. The first runs from June 11 to 16 on the south side of Rt. 120 and the second from June 18 to 23 on the north side. Only articles that can be handled by two men will be taken. No building lumber or garbage will be accepted. Articles should be placed at the curb. This year's Country Art Fair at McHenry, June 22-24. has a doubleheader attraction as a part of the "One Man Show." This feature has been a pcpular feature throughout the history of this auxiliary to McHenry hospital benefit. The show features McHenry county artists in an attractive setting at the McHenry Junior high school, and in the spotlight this year ds the "special at traction" are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wanger. The Wangers have been in business in McHenry county for eighteen years. They've lived on Blackberry drive in Bull Valley for eight years. Mrs. Wanger first became known on the Chicago art scene for her work in oil painting. About fifteen years ago she expanded her artistic endeavors and has been creating paintings in enamel since. Her paintings are modern in technique but reflect a traditional approach. The enamel on copper enables her to present rich colorings and interesting subjects. Though this is a relatively new art form in the United Sates, it is well- recognized in Europe. "Enamel is hot paint, but is a finely powdered glass which fuses to the metal when fired in a kiln," she explains. She creates the paintings by superimposing layers of enamel on copper shadings, and details are achieved through controlled firings. Wanger, about fifteen years ago, took up working with silver seriously. "It has been an enjoyable hobby, and I love it- but the real artist in the family is Louise," he says with a touch of modesty and pride. He's made many types and forms of jewelry, and one of his most interesting artistic achievements is the series of free-form sculptures he develops. At the Country Art Fair, the public will see examples of their varied artistic talent on view in the room set aside for the "One Man Show."
