Whatever lies beyond the bend is as much a mystery as it was when this was a single-lane road. Today we are living in the space age and are exposed to fresh miracles with almost every passing hour. But we still can't "see around the bend" of life. We are as human as we ever were and have no way of knowing what is coming next. , Since the beginning of time, man fias lived with this mystery. What keeps him going? For many, it is the knowledge that the an swer to our fate lies in far more capable hands than ours. This is God's universe, after all, His creation, and we are His creatures. True, you can't see around the bend. But you can equip yourself for life's journey by taking a single, all-important step. This step is toward the church of your choice. criptures selected by the American Bible Society Copyright 1973 Ke fcr Advertising Service, Inc., Strasburg, Virginia Faith Presbyterian Church West of the Outdoor Theatre John O. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry SAVED When we speak of a person being "saved" in a Christian concept, there is often confusion as to what is meant. Jesus spoke of being saved (John 3:17, John 5:34). Many other statements are made in the Bible concerning the necessity of being saved. .Peter asked,, "Who can be saved?" (Matthew 19:25). Luke, the author of Acts comments, "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should • be saved" (Acts 2:47). The Philippian jailor asked of the Apostle Paul, "Sir, what must I do to be saved?" (Acts 16:30). And yet, if 4 we see being saved as a universal need for all mankind as Jesus indicated in John 3:17, we question, "From what are we to be saved?" ; There is a beautiful truth which is somewhat hidden in the King James version of the Bible, but is very evident in the original - language. This is the knowledge revealed in the two words Sheol. (Hebrew) in the Old Testament and its equivelent Hades (Greek) ' in the New Testament. These words are translated somewhat • loosely in the King James Version of scripture as grave, hell, or ' pit. Neither of these words convey the total meaning of those in the ! original languages. (The Revised Standard Version is a much better translation in this particular area). Sheol or Hades is the word used to designate the "world of those . who have departed this life." (Kenneth S. Wuest). There was the area of Sheol or Hades for the righteous dead and another portion* for the unrighteous dead. The Bible teaches this is a place of total consciousness and not a place of rest-sleep (see Luke 16:19 ff). Prior to the death of Jesus Christ, all humanity left this world to, dwell in Sheol or Hades (the same place). However, they were' separated into the righteousness and unrighteous with a vast abyss' between them (Luke 16:26). With the death of the Messiah, Jesup,, all this changed. • When Jesus Christ died on the cross, though He was and is the- divine God, He took upon himself the full penalty for our tran-' sgressions and literally entered into the place Sheol or Hades. He; entered that place where Abraham, Moses and all other righteous dead were retained. But Jesus could not be held there! Hades gates- could not suffice to hold the Son of God (Matthew 16:18). But Jesus, did not come forth from Hades by Himself! He brought with Him; all those departed righteous ones. They are now and eternally with Him (Ephesians 4:7-11). Our righteous ones never go to Sheol or' Hades now. There is only Heaven and God's presence for the "born', again" (I Corinthians 15:54 ff). • In a literal sense, all righteous human beings before Christ were. "saved" by Him. He brought them out of Hades or Sheol. In a. further sense, we also are "saved" as really as they, for we will; never enter Hades, provided we "believe on the Lord: Jesus- Christ" (Acts 16:31). ; FORD X MAC DONALD I MERCURY | F0RD TRUCK LAKE COUNTY HEADQUARTERS TRUCK SPECIALLY PACKAGED SPECIALLY PRICED TO SAVE YOU MONEY Ranchero LARGEST TRUCK INVENTORY IN NORTHERN ILLINOIS Also Large Truck Inventory To Choose From Bronco tflft FLARE KIT AND REFLECTOR SET WITH PURCHASE OF ANY TRUCK FORD Authorized Service Center For Lincoln-Mercurv-Ford, All Ford Trucks MAC DONALD 90S.
