PAGE 12-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 1973 Lakemoor-Lilymoor Alma Hueckstaedt . 385-5689 Urge Residents To Repair Ruts At Mail Boxes Now that the rains have stopped ?? temporarily, and the roads no longer have any puddles standing, you may have noticed that good sized ruts have formed at the ap proaches to the mailboxes. Why not consider the hardship of the ones who deliver the mail, quite often damaging their cars because of these ruts. If they are not filled in, the post office has the authority to refuse delivery of your mail, thus causing problems for you -- you will have to pick your mail up at the post office. Let's fill in those ruts and keep our mailman smiling! Tax Freeze Is Approved By Senate Committee The tax freeze proposal (HB 911) approved by the Senate Finance committee will produce the "most serious and widespread educational catastrophe in the history of Illinois Education," charged Dr. Curtis Plott, * executive secretary of the Illinois Education association (IEA). * Dr. Plott called on the full Senate, which will consider the measure next, to soundly defeat the "freeze", which the IEA chief executive described as "piecemeal and a totally inadequate response to the problem of the inequitable property tax." Plott said he expects the majority of Senators to have the "courage" to vote against this measure instead of "sacrificing the education of Illinois school children for s h o r t - t e r m p o l i t i c a l popularity." The legislation, which would impose a flat dollar freeze, would mean a substantial loss of revenue to Chicago and downstate school districts and other municipal governments, as well. % mm Shown at Conference on Cancer Registries are James D. Hospital Represented At Cancer Conference Among representatives from fifty-eight hospitals attending a conference on Cancer Registries were Geraldine D. Wagner and Helen Golbeck from McHenry hospital. This conference, headed by James D. Majarakis, M.D., was sponsored by the American College of" Surgeons and the American Cancer society. Dr. Majarakis, a clinical professor, Department of Surgery, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine at University of Illinois, stated, "This conference was aimed at bettering cancer control in Illinois by expanding cancer registry programs to improve the measurement of the quality of cancer diagnosis and treatment in institutions here." Robert J. Stein, M.D., chief pathologist at McHenry hospital, and chairman of cancer programs at this hospital, tells the importance of this cancer registry. "Because the history of cancer, both before and after treatment, may spread over many years, it is necessary that the cancer patient be kept under physician surveillance for a longer period of time than with other diseases. The end product of good cancer therapy is added years of life, lived comfortably and productively. Such results can be brought to life only through careful compilation of adequate clinical records covering the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of patients with the disease." A cancer registry can be described as the "mirror" which can reflect to the hospital staff how well it is diagnosing and treating cancer in its hospital. Dr. Stein emphasized that the cancer registry program throughout the United States is becoming an in creasingly effective force in stimulating progress in cancer control, and its impact is greatest in the place where it is most needed, namely, in the general hospital.
