Select a yarn to match the color of the material, and darn the hole with fine stitches. Then put a damp cloth over the spot and iron the patched area. Q. How can I clean a greasy kitchen sink? A. By pouring a little household ammonia into it and rubbing with a cloth. This will remove all dirt and grease and will serve as a deodorant, too. Q. How can I clean jewelry? A. Jewelry can be cleaned with warm water and soap. If very dirty, you can use a soft brush on which you've rubbed a little soap. Another excellent cleanser is a teaspoonful of ammonia in a teacup of warm water. After any of these cleanings, be sure to rinse the article in clear, cold water. Q. How can I remedy a drawer in a piece of furniture or cabinet that doesn't slide in and out very easily? A. Try placing two metal thumbtacks into the front ends of the drawer guides...and quite often this simple expedient will make for smooth sliding. Q. How can I remove strong odors, such as onion, from my kitchen chopping board? A. By rubbing over it with a damp paper towel sprinkled with baking soda. Q. How can I remove smoke and grease stains from woodwork? A. These usually yield when the woodwork is painted with a solution of laundry starch and, after this has dried, rubbed with a soft brush or clean cloth. Q. How can I make a wedge hold a hammer head or a hatchet head on its handle? A. You can do this by driving an ordinary wood screw into the top of the handle. Flatten the screw first so that it has a triangular shape. The teeth which are formed by the flattened threads serve to hold the wedge securely in place. Q. How can I soften, .water?- A Washing soda is one of the safest, economical and eff- fective water softeners. Q. What is a quick and easy way to repair a hole in a win dow or door screen? A. Simply by covering the hole with mosquito netting, then coating this with clear shellac. This makes a sur prisingly substantial repair. Q. How can I clean cups which have become discolored by coffee or tea? „iherta*Bt,l*y " . tux*** . f c T ; a o » » ' ^ Vcut ft I. As LOUISA'S LETTER This column of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U. S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. The column answers questions most frequently asked by taxpayers. Q. For years, I've been taking pictures as a hobby. I have thousands of dollars worth of photographic equipment and a darkroom in my basement. Some years I turn a profit, but most years I lose money. At what point does my hobby become a business so that I can deduct my expenses from my other income? A. The most important feature of a "business" is that it's entered into and carried on for a profit. In general, the IRS presumes that an activity is a business if it produces a profit in any of five consecutive years after 1969. If your activity fails to qualify as a business, you may not use your losses to offset income from other sources. However, hobby ex penses are generally deductible to the extent of your earnings from the activity. In addition, some expenses, such as taxes, interest, and casualty losses are deductible, whether or not you incur them in an activity engaged in for profit. There are special rules for horse breeding, training, show ing or racing. There is also a provision of the law under which a taxpayer may suspend application of the IRS pre sumption of business activity. These rules are explained in IRS Publication 535, "Tax Information on Business Ex penses." Write your Internal Revenue district office for a free copy. Q. Is the cost of birth control pills deductible as a medical expense? A. Yes, if the pills are pre scribed by a physician, the cost is deductible as a medical ex pense. Payments for the pills, along with those for other medicines and drugs, are in cluded in medical expenses to the extent they exceed one per cent of your income. Your total medical expenses are deducti ble only to the extent they exceed three percent of your income. Q. I'm in a National Guard unit that meets one weekend a month at an armory. Can I deduct transportation expenses from my home to drills and back? A. When meetings are held within the general area of what is considered your home for tax purposes, the cost of transportation from your resi dence to Guard meetings is a ommuting expense and is not 'deductible. But, if the meet ings are held outside the gen eral area of your tax home, transportation costs are deduc tible. If a Guard meeting is held after work, you may deduct the cost of going directly from your regular place of employ ment to meetings. RECIPE Dear Louisa, My mother is so old fash ioned that she doesn't want me to dress like all the other girls I go with. She thinks it is bad to wear a tight sweater without a bra or a bikini. What must I do to make her realize that times have changed and nobody pays attention as to how many clothes you have on" Daughter--N.C. Answer: Things have changed but cyou are wrong about what people think when they see girls in garments that are vulgar and in bad taste. I, for one, am glad that we have turned away from some of the prudish ideas of past years but I also think that we have gone too far in displaying our bodies to the public. I recently heard a speak er give statistics on the great increase in the crime of rape during the past year. He felt and I agree with the idea, that much of this has been caused by magazines, theaters and television net works encouraging young people to be immoral. However, I think many of the girls innocently accept ideas and customs, not be cause they are wicked, but because they try to run with the crowd and get attention. I'm sure that if they knew what was in the minds of some of the men who see them they would care less for such attention. Louisa. Address letters: Louisa, Box 532-Orangeburg, S.C. 29115 Magic? Did we use God's gift of life wisely or foolishly? For some, the answer will be easy because they followed the path that God set before them and tried to stay on the straight and narrow. For others, the answer will be diffi cult because they did whatever they felt like doing, following their own whims and self-cen- tered pleasures. When that final day of judge ment comes, will you be pleased with the life you have lived, or will you regret being born? If you are not happy with the way your life is going and you know that God is not happy with your life either, now is the time to do something about it. It is never too late to seek God's forgiveness and God will show you the way. He will also show you his purpose and meaning for your life. Try to find God's will for your life and He will help put you on the right path -- the path home to God. 6% 53/4% ANNUAL YIELD ON 2 YEAR CERTIFICATES OF DEPOSIT 00 MINIMUM DEPOSIT $1000 EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 1973 McHENRY STATE BANK PHONE 385 1040 3510 WEST ELM STREET McHENRY A FULL SERVICE Meet the man who enjoys simplicity, " People like to know who they're buying a car from and how that man runs his v business.
