Twice Told Tales - FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 6, 1933) McHenry business people and residents now enjoy a new service installed by the express company. Free delivery and pick up will now be made anywhere within the city limits. Ambrose Schaefer is handling the carrying of these parcels. Michael and Andrew Mueller won the beautiful Henry L. Hertz trophy in the annual Fourth of July race sponsored each year by the Pistakee Yacht club at Pistakee Bay. This trophy has been sailed for the past many years and is a perpetual gift given by the late H.L. Hertz one time internal revenue collector and state treasurer. George Larkin received a broken nose when he slipped while loading milk cans. His foot slipped as he stood on the edge of a tank and he fell striking his nose against the edge of a milk can. A pretty June wedding was solemnized at St. Peter's church, Spring Grove, on June 29 when Miss Clara May of Spring Grove and Mr. John Boppart were united in marriage with Father Meehan officiating. Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Nickels were surprised by a party of friends Sunday evening in honor of their tenth wedding anniversary. Tom Owen and his gang from W.L.S. will appear at the Bridge Tavern Sunday af­ ternoon and evening. Raymond Steinsdorfer, 13, of Griswold Lake, was lighting a cannon cracker Sunday af­ ternoon when it exploded and burned both hands and badly lacerated the middle finger on his right hand. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Juty 8, 1948) Rt. Rev. Msgr. C.S. Nix, pastor of St. Mary's church for the past twenty-seven years will observe the forty-fifth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on July 11. A partnership of fourteen years came to an end on July 1 when Schaefer's Recreation owned and operated by local brothers, Herman and Am­ brose Schaefer, was sold to John Moeller, manager of the Twin Lakes ballroom and bowling center for eighteen years. « While friends regretted the departure the past week of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Newman and son for their new home in East St. Louis they were happy to learn of his promotion. He has been assigned as special supervisor for the Bankers Life Insurance company of Iowa and will serve St. Claire and Madison counties in Illinois. A regular scheduled sail boat race in the Wonder Lake Yacht club's 1948 championship series was won by the "Admiral Scott" skippered by John and Peter A. Georgeson. Tony Darnell, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Darnell of California, former residents of McHenry, passed away July 1 of rheumatic fever and complications. Excavation has begun for the new addition to the present high school. The new addition to the present building will be ap­ proximately as large as the old structure. Mrs. John Meehan and children of Jacksonville, Fla., were honored guests at a gathering held at the Leroy Conway home on Riverside drive. A picnic dinner and supper were served on the lawn. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 11, 1963) Cynthia Weiss, about two years old, of Country Club drive, was saved from drowning when her mother found the child floating in the river face down and with the aid of a neighbor, Paul Jessup, revived the little girl by mouth to mouth resuscitation. Mr. and Mrs. John B. Klapperich of Ringwood will celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary July 13. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stanek became parents of a daughter, July 7, in McHenry hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Guettler and William Collatz are attending the forty-eighth annual con­ vention of Kiwanis In­ ternational at Convention hall, Atlantic City. Judy Conway of McHenry was picked as best dancer in the dance division of the talented teens program for the Chicagoland area held Saturday night at McCormick place. A well known retired dairy farmer in the Spring Grove area, John A. Jung, 83, died July 7. Janie Melsek of Fort Myers Villas boated her first tarpon, a 90 pounder, while fishing at Big Carlos Pass. The battle lasted 45 minutes. Janie is the four­ teen year old daughter of former McHenry residents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Melsek. The McHenry Country club will sponsor a county Junior Golf tournament.
