Many people do, when they could receive the same services for less, according to Illinois Bell. Bell Manager Stan Jozwiak points out there are several cost-saving habits that telephone customers can develop to get the most for their money. Probably the most publicized of these is to select a "discount" time at which to place your long distance calls. Calls placed when the telephone system is least busy are cheaper than during peak business hours, Jozwiak ex­ plained. * Dial-it-yourself rates are lowest on weekends, until 5 p.m. Sunday and £fter 11 p.m. daily. The next best bargain is from 5 to 11 p.m. Did you know that the night period --11 p.m. to 8 a.m. - for out-of-state calls has a one- minute initial period instead of the normal three? This is the time to make a quick and inexpensive call. The telephone company also stresses calls you dial yourself cost less than those placed through an operator. However, if operator assistance is required, by placing the call station-to-statiqn, you can save as much as 50 percent over the person-to-person rate. House Okays Tax Safeguards The Illinois House of Representatives has approved a series of major amendments to a bill sponsored by Rep. Donald E. Deuster (R. Sylvan Lake) to create and finance a six-county mass transit system for Northeastern Illinois. According to Deuster, his bill as amended now contains "six basic safeguards designed to assure fair treatment and good public transporation in all areas of the Chicago Metropolitan region." Deuster said: "The key amendment to my bill allows the people of any county by referendum and majority vote to decide whether to stay in the mass transit system or not. Although I personally believe that our suburban counties will enjoy great benefits from in­ clusion in CMATS (the Chicago Metropolitan Area Tran­ sportation system), I want the people -- and the taxpayers - to have the final word." Other financial safeguards in Deustcr's bill, H.B. 1046, are: (1) Two-thirds of any funds raised in the City of Chicago, suburban Cook county or any county must^be spent by CMATS for transit services within that county; (2) Any county may elect to use one- third of the added IV2 cent gas tax collected in the county for highway purposes; (3) any county may elect to use all of the added gas tax for highway purposes; (4) new bus or other mass transit services may be added if the local area agrees to pay 65 percent to 90 percent of the losses involved in adding such service; (5) each county including Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, Will and Cook must have at least one voting voice on the CMATS Board of Directors; and (6) "as the ultimate safeguard and as a strong incentive for CMATS to treat all areas fairly" Deuster had his bill amended to allow counties to disconnect from CMATS by referendum. Name Nurse To Advisory College Group Victoria Behan, assistant administrator at McHenry hospital, has been chosen to represent McHenry County college on the nursing advisory committee of Elgin Community college. The two junior colleges have a cooperative nursing program agreement under which students from McHenry county will be allotted space in the ECC nursing program. The cooperative agreement will begin in the fall semester of this year. Ms. Behan is a lifelong resident of Crystal Lake. She received her R.N. degree from St. Anthony's hospital, Chicago, and the Bachelor's and Master's degrees from DePaul university. Before coming to McHenry hospital, she served as director of nursing at St. Joseph's hospital in Elgin for seven years. She also served at St. Anthony's hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Oak Park hospital. Any meat cuts suitable for broiling, pan-broil­ ing, pan-frying or roasting can be successfully cooked over the coals. But no matter what meat cut you use, your success with outdoor cooking lies in the pro­ per use of equipment and cook­ ing procedures. Steaks and chops can be cooked on the grill, but they should be at least three-quarters to an inch thick for best results and to pre­ vent drying out. You should use a shielded or covered rotisserie to cook a roast. Allow about three-quarters to a pound per person for bone cuts. Boneless cuts require from one- third to three-quarters of a pound per person. Cooking time for a large bone­ less rib roast may be 3% to 5 hours. A meat thermometer is the best guide to determine the done- ness of roasts. Low to moderate temperatures should be used for cooking meats outdoors. Coals should glow ra­ ther than flame. The amount of heat and the cooking rate can be controlled by adjusting the dis­ tance of the rotisserie or grill from the coals.
