Twice Told Tales Wonder Lake / _ Mary Jean Huff 728-0267 FORTY YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of July 13, 1933) More than 100 farmers irt the southeastern part of the county can now obtain free seed to replant their crops which were wiped out in the tornado of a week ago according to a statement made by W.A. Herrington, McHenry County farm adviser. McHenry, the gateway city, will be widely advertised during the next few months by means of 50,000 folders which are being put out by the McHenry Civic club. These folders which are the product of the presses of the McHenry Plaindealer will be placed in hotels, restaurants and other public places throughout Chicago and the Century of Progress and will guide tired world's fair visitors to a place of rest and quiet among the trees and along the shores of the placid Fox river or on the banks of one of the beautiful lakes in this region. ^ A pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Peter's church at Volo July 12, when Miss Evelyn Thennes and Mr. Leo Diedrich were united ir^ marriage with Fr. George L. Starck officiating. A junior choir is being organized at the Methodist church and boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 15 are invited to join. Examinations for teachers' certificate will be held in the office of the County Superin­ tendent of Schools in Wood­ stock, July 20 and 21. Fifty-three licenses to sell beer outside the corporate limits of cities and villages in the county have been granted by the license committee of the county board. Doherty, 86, former mayor of McHenry mourn his death which oc­ curred July 10, following a lingering illness. Appointment of John E. Lindsay, West McHenry, to a three year term on Farmers Home Administration County committee for McHenry county has been announced by George H. Reuss, state director. Mr. Lindsay succeeds Robert W. Gardner. The public is invited to the Ringwood church July 18 to get acquainted with the new pastor and his wife. Rev. and Mrs. Charles Stephens. A report was received this week in the office of Sheriff C. Bau that James K. Norton, 24, of McHenry has been missing since July 10. He was last seen driving a Chevrolet coupe near this city. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Althoff received a telegram informing them that their daughter, Mrs. Eleanor J. Waiter of Memphis, Tenn., had been selected as a finalist in the "Loveliest Mother" contest which was sponsored jointly by the Daily News and RKO Radio Pictures. Impressive "topping" ceremonies of the high tower for WILA, McHenry county's new i FM radio station, were held . this week. Webster, certified public accountant in DesPlaines. Policeman Jack Schoenholtz returned to duty with the city force after being bitten on the knee by a dog. The Jaycees second annual barbecue on the village green will be held Aug. 4 at the city park. Proceeds from the barbecue will be used for the community development program *>f the organization. About 300 feet of property near Landmark school will be blacktopped for use as a parking area. The program also includes widening Waukegan street in front of the school. The Daughters of the American Revolution have requested that we participate in the "Bells on Independence Day" observance begun a decade ago by two patriots in Connecticut and now celebrated from coast to coast. Public officials, veterans' organizations and other civic, religious and labor groups will cooperate with appropriate ceremonies and observances. Young Todd weighed in at 6 lbs., 9 oz., when he was born on Sunday, June 17, at St. Ann's Hospital in Chicago. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Draper, reside in Forest Park. Proud maternal Wonder Lake grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. D.C. Sturm and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ed Draper, Ook I,awn. Great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. George Sturm of MeComb, and Mrs. Clarence (Ocie) Vogler of Rock Island. The baby's mother is the former Debbie Sturm. Howlett, Secretary of State, has ex­ tended the deadline for displaying 1973-1974 license plates on trucks and other second division vehicles licensed on a fiscal year basis until midnight Tuesday, July 31. "One of the reasons for the extension," Howlett said, "is that heavy rains and flooding have delayed farm planting and have hampered con­ struction crews and dump truck operators."
