It is anticipated that the board will approve the plans. "We are very optimistic that the construction program will be under way by the first of September. In a meeting last week with the Capital Development board staff, the st^ff indicated that the C.D.B. should approve our plans on July 14 and ask Governor Walker to release the funds." said Dr. James R. Davis, president at MCC. "If Governor Walker ap proves the release of the funds, the money should he released by July 19, which makes July 24 the earliest date which the contractors can get bids." he added. According to Davis, if these deadlines are met, Aug. 22 will be the due date for bids from contractors. Ground breaking would follow during the first week of September The special board of trustees meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Crystal Lake campus of the college, 6200 Northwest highway, Crystal Lake. HURT IN FALL John R. Jepsen, Jr., five- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Jepsen, Sr., of 1214 N. Park street, McHenry, hurt his back when he fell from a playground slide at the McHenry beach on Riverside drive during water fightst Crashes Lead To Charges On Various Other Violations There is plenty of news being made each day, but in McHenry at this moment the focus is on Marine Festival Week with its many activities. Everybody has his favorite event, but for the great majority it is probably the street parade Sunday af ternoon. This hour-plus line of march annually attracts the greatest number of people - a real bit of encouragement for those who have contributed in so many and varied ways to become a part of it. The drum and bugle corps add a particular spirit to the floats, whatever their theme might be, and we find a warm feeling just knowing there's a thread of patriotism that ac companies their appearance. It isn't always the music; sometimes it's only the American flag symbolic of the sponsoring organization. But the spirit is there and each year we become convinced anew that parades are a very special part of Americana. Another big part of the weekend will be Saturday's Sidewalk Sale. Last year we made our way into a number of stores and found not only some out standing sales but a feeling of sincere hospitality. The theme this year is "The Soaring, Roaring '20's", which promises to provide a wide variety of ideas for display windows and employees' attire. There is so much more, but everything is outlined elsewhere on this page. Most of us can't take in all of the activities, but don't make a mistake and ignore the festival entirely. So very much time and preparation have been put into the events that all of us who are the recipients of the planning are assured we have much to gain. Among the very busy people this week will be members of the McHenry Police depart ment, headed by Ken Espey. Those who know the chief best have discovered he is vulnerable in at least one area. He may be the top man locally in law and order, but he has one heckuva time turning out the family wash. The fact that every piece sparkles is of little consolation - \t should, he works at it! This is how it went. During recent hospitalization of Mrs. Espey, her husband exhausted his supply of clean clothing and was faced with the choice of buying new ones or learning how milady operates in the laundromat. To his chagrin, he chose the latter. Acting on a minimum of advice, he separated one basket of clothes between six washers (no dark socks with white clothes; cold water for bright colors, etc.) Selecting an inconvenient hour in order that his lack of know-how would escape knowledgeable women washers, he emerged vic torious with a white, bright wash. Only his pride was slightly awry for making a major undertaking out of one of his wife's routine chores. Many little ladies will smile in appreciation for the fact that the biggest, strongest males remain sadly inadequate outside their own bailiwick. K.A.F. BIKE CRACKDOWN Chief Kenneth Espey of the McHenry Police department announced this week that there will be a crackdown on bicycle riders who violate regulations which apply to operation of the vehicles within the city limits. He emphasized that tickets - not warnings -- will be given by officers for those who disregard stop signs. About 3 o'clock ^rijt^iy morning, a resident of Wboded lane, McHenry, informed county officials that a truck had been seen backing from a nearby driveway where the residents were known to be on vacation. The van then departed, driven in an erratic manner. Inspection of the residence revealed nothing had been disturbed. However, a short time later, information Was received that a similar vehicle had been involved in an accident on Sunnyside Beach drive, just west of Stubby drive, near Johnsburg. The van had hit three parked vehicles. Two of the vehicles were owned by James N.Jieard, Jr., of 1911 W. Sunnyside Beach and the other by Ted Smith of 1909 W. Sun nyside Beach drive. Driver of the van, William H. Stevens of 127 S. Route 12, Fox Lake, stated he wasn't the driver and had never seen the van he was supposedly driving. However, Stevens was seen behind the wheel of the van by Heard and another witness. They apprehended him as he tried to leave the scene. A routine inquiry of Stevens' driver's license resulted in his arrest for driving while license was expired more than six months. Since he was un cooperative and refused to give the necessary information for the accident investigation, he was also arrested for disor derly conduct. Bond was set at $85 for both offenses. F u r t h e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n revealed the van Stevens was operating belonged to Robert Williams of 1815 Fairfield, Round Lake. Golz of 112 East End avenue, Crystal Lake, escaped injuries when his car ran into a utility pole Thursday afternoon about 4:30 at 2118 Orchard Beach drive, McHenry. However, his passenger, Thomas L. Golz told deputies he was south-bound when he made a turn in the road and hit a pole. A witness stated the vehicle was approaching her as she walked alongside the roadway. When it was about 100 feet from her, it turned and smashed into the pole. Golz was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an a c c i d e n t .
