THE BIBLE SPEAKS r j ACT&OFLOVE - J The final week of the ministry\Qf Jesus Christ had come. Jesus was now at dinner at the house of Shfton thpieper. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, their brother, were also present. Opposition and hatred toward Jesus had reached a climax among the rulers of Israel. They had sought to arrest Him before (John 7:32; 45-52). But nowfewith the added attention Jesus was receiving following , the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11), they were more than ever filled with hate and determination to destroyjHim. As Jesus sat at Simon's house in Bethany, He must have been very conscious of the hate directed toward Him from the rulers of Jerusalem. He knew of their plot to kill Him. Hfe knew also of Judas Iscariot's plan to betray Him. There must have been some sorrow in His heart as He thought of the other eleven, each of whom would forsake Him during his trial (Mark 14:50). But there was one act of love which took place at the supper which must have literally thrilled the heart of Jesus. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, had been captivated by the presence of Jesus all during the evening. Her entire family had been especially attracted toward Jesus for many months. They had provided hospitality for the Lord on several occasions. The raising of her brother from the dead only built her love to a com plete devotion. On impulse Mary arose from supper, took "an alabaster box of ointment" (Mark 14:3) and poured it on His head. There could have been no greater act of love on Mary's part than this. The others frowned on Mary and called her act a "waste" (Verse 4). It was suggested the ointment could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. All the apostles agreed. Surely this would have been more in keeping with the teaching of Jesus. But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why trouble ye her? She hath wrought a good work on Me" (Verse 6). As we consider all the hatred, jealousy, and criticism directed toward the Lord, we begin to see how precious this one act from a devoted woman must have been to Him. rt J This all shoula suggest to us how pleased the Lord Jesus must be with us when we perform some particular act of devotion for Him. He says one who even gives to drink a "cup of cold water only*' shall not lose his reward (Matthew 10:42). It was said of Jesus that He "went about doing good" (Acts 10:38). ^'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me." (Matthew 25:40).
