Len Schoenherr Sunday Worship 11 a.m. Sun day School. 9:45 a.m. The game of golf reveals something fundamental in the character of man. For when man builds a golf course he deliberately creates hazards for himself. He builds his fairways between clumps of trees . . . dots them with bunkers and sand traps . . . often terraces his greens with confusing slopes. The whole idea--to make things harder for himself! It is this same trait in human character that constantly concerns our churches. Christianity doesn't teach that life can be--or should be--easy. It teaches us that hazards must challenge us to choose the right way. And it teaches men how to recover from their mistakes--w^-h God's help. For thousands who find themselves in one of the traps of life . . . our religion offers precious help and reassurance. Sessions wHl be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 6 through 10. The four departments \Vill be kindergarten (children en tering as well as those who just finished); first and second graders, third and fourth graders, and fifth and sixth graders (all for children who have just finished those grades). Using the theme, "Created by God", the church school teachers have been making many plans, attending two workshops at the church during July. Persons with children of their own, or who know children of kindergarten through sixth grade age, are asked to con sider sending them to Faith Vacation Church school. A small registration fee is asked to cover the expense of books and materials. Registration forms may be obtained from Mrs. Barbara Schoeff, 4218 W. Ponca, McHenry. With music, crafts and wonderful learning experiences every day, culminated by a trip to Pleasant Valley farm, Woodstock, Friday afternoon and a youth worship service Americans are consuming vast amounts of prepared convenience foods with much of the kitchen work done by the processor. The cost of this built- in service has gone up far more than the cost of the basic food item itself. D I A L - A - D E V Q T I O N P H O N E 8 Hear God 's Word Wherever You Are . Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry THE DAY OF THE LORD The Bible speaks of a time called the Day of the Lord. There are many Old Testament as well as New Testament references to this day. "The day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon everyone that is proud and lofty, and upon everyone that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low" (Isaiah 2:12.) "...the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty" (Isaiah 13:6. See also Joel 1:15, 3:14: and Zechariah 14:1.) "For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, peace and safety: then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as a travail upon a woman with child: and they shall not escape" (I Thessalonians 5:2, 3.) From these verses, we see the Day of the Lord will be a day of destruction, judgment, of surprise and also it will be inescapable. From several passages of scripture, we would understand this "day" to be a period of time, climaxed by the second coming of Jesus Christ, rather than a literal day. (Isaiah 13:6, 9, 10 and Revelation 6:12; Revelation 8:12; Matthew 24:29; also Zechariah 14: Iff with Revelation 19:11-16 and Matthew 24:27-30). The Day of the Lord is the latter part of what is known as the Tribulation period and will be climaxed by the second coining of Jesus Christ (K. Wuest - Word Studies Volume 3). Jesus Christ will have received his followers to himself (John 14:1-6) before the Tribulation period (Matthew 24:40-42). The Tribulation will be a sad and terrible time where only a few persons will identify with Christ (Matthew 24:21-22). The latter part of this period is called the "Great Tribulation" which will abruptly end with the second coming of Christ (Matthew 24:21). The Day of the Lord will be the beginning of the absolute reign of Jesus'Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 17:14). Those faithful Christians will live and reign with him for a thousand years (Revelation 20:4). They will inherit the Kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world(Matthew 25:34ff.) But for the unbelieving and non-Christian, the Day of the Lord will be a day of judgment and despair. There will be no receiving of a Lord and Savior for them, but a Judge and Destroyer. Jesus said, "God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved" (John 3:17). However, if we persist in rejecting him, "...he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him!" (John 3:36b.) REPRESENTS CHARITIES Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockford announced the appointment of a new executive secretary for its Elgin branch. James C. Kurts, ACSW, has been named to be full time executive secretary with the responsibility of dirdeting all programs of the Elgin branch of Catholic Charities. The programs consist mainly of service to The Wayne VanHeirslee family of Waukegan were guests* of their grandmother; Mrs. Elizabeth Michels Monday. The Donald VanHefrS?ee family of Liber- tyville were visitors on Wed nesday. unmarried parents, adoptive families, foster home care, and a service of counseling to in dividuals, married couples and families. These services are available to all regardless of their religious affiliation. Americans today are eating more meals away from home than ever before. Americans today eat 115.6 pounds of beef a year. In 1950 they were eating only 63.4 pounds of beef, per individual, each year. Farmers received only 40 cents of every dollar Americans spent of farm- produced foods at the store in 1972.
