PAGE 6 - PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8,1973 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ McHenry Shamrocks Still Bid For State NIAB Title How did we ever live without air conditioning? Maybe the same way we lived with coal stoves, wood burners, horse and buggy transportation, model T Fords, hand pushed lawn mowers, buttef hung down in the well to keep it cool, wash boards, fleece lined long underwear, radio and T.V. Nowadays they refer to a pitcher's speed as velocity. That's like the way they changed every germ to a virus. The way batting averages have fallen in the big leagues, the hitters may have to form a separate union to have the rules changed. The Shamrocks came from behind to beat Freeport in their first game of the State tour nament by a score of 6-5. Beloit's powerful team put the Shamrocks in place, beating them 11-3. This put the "Rocks" in the losing bracket of the double-elimination tour nament. They played Earlville Sunday night to beat them 5-2. This puts McHenry in the tournament with Beloit, Rock- ford Blackhawks. and Freeport. McHenry will face the Blackhawks Wednesday at 8:00 at Blackhawk park in Rock ford. The Shamrocks faced Freeport Saturday morning. They scored an unearned run in the first and 3 runs in the third. The Shamrocks got lazy and Freeport came back in the seventh to tie it up when Stahlman gave up 3 unearned runs and 2 hits. Then in the eighth, Freeport scored again to knock Stahlman out of the box. Salter retired the side and in the bottom of the ninth Rusty Zick hit a triple with a man on and the third baseman left the ball skid past him on the throw to third. This gave Zick the opportunity to score the win ning run. When McHenry faced Beloit they were simply outclassed. Beloit scored one in the third 5 in the fourth, 3 in the sixth, and 2 in the seventh. McHenry scored in the fourth and 2 in the fifth but failed to score after the fifth to give Beloit the win after 7 due to the 8 run rule. With a good rest, McHenry faced Earlville. McHenry scored once in the second when Rohrer singled and Jackson singled. A passed-ball gave Rohrer a chance to score. In the third Thurhoffer led off with a single and Pokorny got a base hit. Two wild pitches scored both Thurnhoffer and Pokorny before Rogers singled. This gave the Shamrocks all they needed to give Rusty Zick the win and Fultz the loss. Come out to Rockford and cheer your exciting McHenry Shamrock team to victory. On Wednesday, Aug. 1 three young lassies representing McHenry participated in the Junior Boy-Girl-Best-Ball tournament. They were Pam Spengel, Mary O'Connell and Toni Weber. This tournament, sponsored by N.I.M.A.G.A. and N.I.W.A.G.A., brought together young lads and lassies from the entire Mid-West-Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. A beginner to golf and in her first tournament, 14 year old Toni Weber teamed with Andy King of DeKalb to win the one-day event with a net of 69. Toni's trophy will be on display for the next several days in McHenry C.C. pro shop where proud pappa Warren will undoubtedly be guarding it and lecturing on the joys of fatherhood. On Thursday and Friday the girls were on their own, par ticipating in the Junior Division of N.I.W.A.GA.A the fourth year for this junior division, under the sponsorship of the senior women. Again Toni put herself in the limelight by shooting a net of 156 for the two- day event. Come to think of it, there will be two trophies for Pappa to guard. Modesty enhanced the sparkle in Toni's blue eyes as she commented, "I don't think it's fair to win two trophies when some girls didn't win any." SENIOR DIVISION Representing our local club in the 12th Annual Senior Divison of N.I.W A G.A were the following ladies: M. Bisshoff, L. Busscher, N. Fidler, M. Leisten, L. Michaels, L. Nolan, F. Participating in Championship Flight, Marilyn Bisshoff won the low putts trophy with a total of 64 putts for the two days. Very nice putting on greens that were both large and difficult to read. Third Flight produced three McHenry winners when Floss O'Connell walked away with first place, followed closely by Vi Turner in second place and Dee Overton in fourth place. Fourth Flight brought forth two more McHenry gals as winners when Nell Fidler eased out the other contenders to win first place and Liz Nolan captured fifth place.
