Woodstock, presently in third, scored first when Heisler and Fuhler singled and were driven home with a double by Menge. But that was the extent of the scoring in that inning for Woodstock and the VFW girls batted around with a series of singles and walks, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Kathy Barry. At the end of the first inning, the score was 8-2, McHenry over Woodstock. Woodstock added two runs in the second and one in the fifth, but couldn't contain the bats of the VFW girls, who scored in each inning but the sixth. McHenry's defensive game was sparkling as fine plays were turned in by catcher Kathy Barry, shortstop Mary King, second baseman Roni Bierman. rightfielder Lin Meurer, and leftfielder Betsy Stephenson. The girls, successfully coached by Maggie Miller and Pam Shaffer, are now 15-2 with two home games on Friday, August 10, and Friday, August 17, and a tournament to be held in Lake-In-The-Hills later this month. They will each receive individual trophies for their hard work necessary in Last Monday the Ladies of McHenry Country club had as their guests 15 sightless vets from Hines hospital. The first question, of course, is - how do these men golf if they can't see the ball and where they are to hit it9 That is where the challenge comes to the girls. After watching the men take a practice swing, they put the ball where it should be, to be hit! Simple*' Not quite - but everyone had a real great day. Their guests stayed for lunch and seemed to enjoy their outing tremendously. Next Monday and Tuesday are the first two of four days of club championship play. The following Monday and Tuesday will decide our 1973 Champ. August is an exciting month! building a league championship girls' softball team, and the McHenry VFW, as considerate sponsors, will receive the grand lst-place trophy for their collection. After arriving by bus and meeting their hostesses the men graciously posed for the accompanying group photo. Then, teeing off tees one through six simultaneously, the men and women en joyed a shot-gun round of golf. With the help of the gals in giving them a sense of direction and yardage the men showed what courage and determination can overcome. Undaunted by the obstacles on the course that bother many players the men chipped over the sandtraps, two-putted most of the greens, hit the ball down the fairways and, in general, played the kind of golf that many duffers would be pleased to play. During luncheon, which followed the golfing, one of the visitors entertained by playing several numbers on the piano. Then Millie Simon took over at the keyboard playing a fine repertoire of old- time favorites for a sing-a-long and also accompanying Nancy Wilkins on several beautiful solos. The only regret in a heart warming experience for the women was that the day ended early. A call from Liz Nolen fetched us- down to McHenry Country Club Monday morning. The gals were hosts to a group of blind veterans from Hines Hospital. Our ace photographer, Wayne Gaylord, was on the job to take pictures. We plan to have a couple of those pictures on the sports page this issue. Wayne went out on the course and took shots for a spread he will set up for next week. We won't elaborate since you will find a very good story turned in covering the day's events. Would like to congratulate the girls and the Club for providing a great day for those men from Hines. It must be later than we think. Marie has cancelled her order for World Series tickets. Expect to see many new faces on the teams - North and South -- next year. Heard some talk of replacing plate glass windows in store fronts with glass bricks. Vandalism and burglaries, you know. Imagine what that would do to window shopping! The ladies would revolt. But, window shopping isn't so bad when the stores are closed. As our better half looked over some dresses one Sunday night, Gene Morenz remarked, "You're safe. The store is closed,,. - They had better make room ahead in the McHenry Country Club Championship tour nament. Ed Cepulis tells he was in a foursome this week when Gary Adams shot a 67.
