FAMILY VACATION The Cliff Hanson family returned recently from a week's vacation traveling around Lake Superior. At Iron Mountain. Mich., they took a tour of an iron mine. While staying at Beaver Pete's Campgrounds, little Linda made friends with a two month old fawn, but he ran away when Linda's older sisters, Bonnie and Mary, tried to pet him. The family also took tours of an uranium mine in Ontario and a grain elevator at Thunder Bay, Ontario. At International Falls, Minn , they went through a paper mill. 600 foot high hills around Duluth, Minn., im pressed the group. All in all the Hansons agreed they had a real nice time and it was a nice vacation. CAUTION CHILDREN A note to parents. Some kids at the Lake think chasing garbage trucks and playing around mail cars and delivery trucks is great fun. This type of "fun" could bring about great tragedy. Summer is nearly over and most children have forgotten the safety rules laid out by their parents last spring. Some of us would like to think, "My child wouldn't do a thing like that," but the truth is, most of ours do. A repeated word of caution and a bit of emphasis on respect for moving vehicles is much needed at this time. Please, let's be sure our kids are present when that good old school bell rings in September. GREETINGS Belated birthday greetings to Phyllis Letizia, who celebrated on August 12. A belated bir thday present will be the arrival of a grandchild when Labor Day rolls around. Congratulations to a handsome young couple. Bob and Laurie Freund, who will celebrate their second anniversary on August 26. Happy birthday to Jack Liggett who might just enjoy having a cool one on his newly landscaped lawn on August 26. Young Kurt Scheib, son of Joan and Ken Scheib blows out six big candles on August 27. Happy days to you all! In addition to swimming in crystal clear Silver Lake, they also took a dip in Lake Michigan, only to find to their surprise and delight that other Lake "dippers" were Rev. Richard Wright and his family from Wonder Lake, who just happened to be camping at the same campsite as the Webers. A three mile hike across the sand dunes to Lake Michigan and back left the family pretty exhausted and pretty sandy. Other activities included Dune Buggy and paddle boat rides, a tour of the- Kellogg Factory in Battle ; Creek, Mich., a stop at Holland, Mich., and a visit to a little winery in Buchanan, Mich. A combination welcome home and belated father's day gift greeted the family on their arrival back in Wonder Lake, a Siamese kitty, which Jack named T.C., short for The Cat. Attorney General William J. Scott has announced that the State of Illinois will receive over $1,600,000 from the estate of the late Secretary of State Paul Powell under the terms of a proposed settlement of a law suit filed by Scott against the Powell estate. Scott filed the suit against the estate in July of 1971, con tending that Powell could never have amassed his $3 million- plus fortune on his state salary and declared assets. The suit further alleged that much of the Powell income was derived from secret and private payments for concessionaire and vending privileges in the capital, influence payments from special interests, and at least $100,000 lost to the state by failure to take competitive bids on state purchases. Under the terms of the p r o p o s e d s e t t l e m e n t , negotiated by Scott and the estate officials, the funds would be allocated as follows: 1. $100,000 in damages to be paid into the State of Illinois general revenue fund. 2. The balance of $1,500,000 will provide for: a. Grants to the Illinois State Historical Library and Society in furtherance of its purposes and objectives. b. Grants to the Illinois State Museum in furtherance of its purposes and objectives. c. Grants to appropriate public and private organizations in furtherance of the restoration of the Gover nor's Mansion in Springfield. Under terms of the proposed settlement, the Johnson County Circuit court would appoint an advisory committee to assist the First National Bank of Mattoon in awarding the grants. Suggested members of the advisory group would be tbe president or secretary of fie State Historical society, the curator of the Illinois State museum, the Attorney General, and a public member to be appointed by the Governor. As to the $l,500,000-plus balance of the more than $3,000,000 estate, Scott said federal and state inheritance taxes could be expected to take a major share of that sum. It was reported in February of this year, for example, that the Internal Revenue Service had revised upward to more than $1,000,000 the amount of taxes and penalties owed by the Powell estate. Originally, the IRS had filed a $370,000 lien against the estate. d i s t i n c t i v e and a p p a r e l Not Worth It Aunt--No man would catch me running along a beach in a costume like that!
