Eye Accidents Suffered Daily By 1,000 Americans More than 1,000 Americans suffer eye accidents every working day, the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness festimates. Large industry has done a fine job of providing safety goggles, eye shields and other devices to protect the eyes of workers engaged in dangerous jobs, Leonard H. Heise, executive director of the Society admits, but more is needed. Heise recommends that not only "hazardous jobs," but "hazardous areas" as well be studied to provide adequate safety protection. Too often passers-by are hit in the eye by objects spun off from lathes, or other machinery, while the worker himself who is operating the machine is protected by his face shield or goggles. The concept of, hazardous area protection can go far to minimize eye accidents, Heise states, since the Society's experience has shown that at least 90 per cent of all eye accidents are preventable if proper precautions are used. The Society is now preparing a new folder about Industrial Eye Safety which will be available soon free of charge from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, 220 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois 60604. 4--H Leaders Meet To Plan For '74 Fair Coordination, cooperation and communication are the keys to any big event. Those are the aims of the McHenry County Fair Association and the Cooperative Extension Service in inviting all 4-H leasers and Fair association board memSers to meet Monday, Aug. 27. The 1973 County fair and 4-H show is over but it's^ot too soon to make plans for 1974. Chuck Weingart, Fair association president, extended the in vitation to the 4-H Leaders since they work closely with the youth who participate in the fair. 4-H leaders will be able to make suggestions and give their opinions on the workings of the fair, including the 4-H livestock auction and advance ticket sales. In addition, Bruce Waddell, State Representative, 33rd district, will speak in regard to 4-H premiums, other fair premiums and the fair and exposition fund. The Fair association meeting will be held at 8:15 p.m., Building "D", fairgrounds, Woodstock. SEW "WHAT?
