PAGE.»- PLAIN DEALER Lakemoor-Lilymoor Alma Hueckstaedt 385-5689 Warn Swimmers Of Presence Of Snakes At Beach Although the lake has been announced safe for swimming, some precautions should be taken. It was brought to my attention that there are snakes in the lake. They were sighted at the beach behind the Longhorn restaurant. It is not known if these snakes are poisonous or not but every care should be given as if they were. This particular beach is not used all the time, so it is the perfect place for these snakes to inhabit. The beach in Lakemoor is used quite a bit more and the snakes won't go around there because of the activity. The owners of the Longhorn restaurant have stated the beach there is private property and there is no swimming allowed. If the children insist on going there, the Longhorn will not be responsible for accidents, snake bites, or in juries received from that property. Residents are to consider themselves informed to the fact, as of this date. As far as the snakes are concerned, sonic brave soul would have to catch one and take it to the board of health, in Woodstock, and they would identify the type of snake and whether or not the snake is poisonous. If someone is willing to take the snake, I would appreciate a phone call from you after you have the results and I can inform other readers to the facts. For the remainder of the summer, the children of Lily moor are allowed to use the beach in Lakemoor. SUMMER VISITORS In June, Patrick Moffett spent several days with the Hueckstaedt family. Mr. Moffett resides in Los Angeles, Calif. Then, in August, we had a visit from John Gilmer of Anaheim, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Gilmer of Hanover Park, formerly of Arizona. Guests in the Donald Leske household, were Mr. and Mrs. Rich Carll, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Anna Rosch of Santa Monica, Calif., and Agnes Kuhne, also of St. Petersburg. IN CLOSING Once again I'm asking for the cooperation of our residents. With all the birthdays and anniversaries listed, surely, you have a party once in awhile. Why not let us write about it? Everyone likes to see their name in print, and you can always cut that part of the column out as a keepsake. If you have out-of-town guests, you can send them a small memory of their visit here. So. don't feel bashful-give us a call before Thursday afternoon. You. the readers, are the ones who make the column--I can only write up what news you give me. Hopefully, I'll see you next week. Hanner) Illinois towns do a lot for anyone who likes them. On our last little jaunt--consider: Ellisville. It lies about 25 miles south of Galesburg on the Spoon river. It has a population of 200; it was quite a place when the coal mine operated; that is, when its Opera House was built. It is also in the Edgar Lee Masters' territory. We got into town and found a little store. The man in the store sent his sister with the key to show us the Opera House across the street and upstairs in a building about 80 years old. The stage had a curtain painted years ago advertising businesses long dead (harness shop, etc.) There were old chairs the like of which I had not seen for many years. They are used because every year a group of college students come over for a weekend and put on an "Old Fashioned Mellerdramer." The Odd Fellows meet there also and are responsible for the building and its use. I gave the lady a bill for her time. Said she: "Oh, thank you! I'll give this Participating will be Lake County Alert Team 299, North Chicago Civil Defense and Northern Illinois Alert-React. to the lodge. They have a time making expenses and it does cost to run." It was here I made the list of wild flowers that I wrote about last week. Peoria, long the second largest city in the state is now third. It is the see city of two bishops. Caterpillar Tractor is nearby and is a main source of business for the town. The great new bridge over the Illinois river is named for a past Caterpillar president and a great man in Peoria whom I knew--now dead these twenty years, the Murray Baker bridge. All of downtown Peoria has been rebuilt. There is a new courthouse, a new Creve Couere club building, big new motels, library, post office, office buildings and restaurants. It is a coming town! Rockford watch out! The new Caterpillar tractor office building down town is superbly landscaped. There are paved recreational terraces with well cared for gardens. The cour thouse is also well landscaped and has mini-gardens and a fine great fountain. Some difference from the '30's and '40's. Daily 9-9 Sunday 9-6 4400 W. Rte. 120, McHenry WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 29. 1*73 Varna. 417 population. It at tracted our attention because there was a bank robbery there described over the news broadcasts. We passed through on our way home. Rose suggested there might not be $40,000 in Varna which is the amount reported stolen. I suppose though there must have been, what with inflation and all! I have been interested in Everett McKinley Dirksen ever since he pointed his finger at Tom Dewey in the Republican convention of 1952 and roared aloud over TV for all to hear-- "You led us down the road to defeat!" Of course Pekin, his home town, was on my list of musts. It lies on the Illinois river about ten miles south of Peoria now approaching a population of 35.000. Typical city for its size, it represents Illinois well enough to have sent a man to the U.S. Senate. Here is the old city library surrounded by the new Dirksen Memorial library which the President came to Illinois to start one day this summer. Here on a shaded street in a residential area three doors from the Episcopal church (whose one time rector Wayne Johnson is now my successor in Kenilworth) is the old home of the Senator. It is a fairly good sized two-story white frame house of a sort that many of us have occupied. Mrs. Dirksen's mother now lives there. It is not open to the public. The house looks Middle West, common folksy, Illinoisy. It is fit to be a shrine. It represents so many of us. There are homes like it right here in McHenry, indeed all over the state. Out on Route 29 is the cemetery where the Senator's remains lie buried. I went to see the spot. It is a religious cemetery. There are monuments of Christ in the garden, the Last Supper, etc., but there are no individual monuments to hodge podge the whole. Every grave has a marker even with the ground. We found the one we sought - Everett McKinley Dirksen-- date of birth and death and worked into the plaque- marigolds-the flower he worked to have made our national flower. He lies amid the people he served. I should tell about Lewistown-no I'll save that for another time. Eight Area Students Earn MCC Recognition Eight area students earned academic honors at McHenry County college during the summer session. Those receiving High Honors (3.5-4.0) were Melissa M. Hall and Marion J. Olson of McHenry, Wayne A. Wautelet of Rich mond and Janice M. Absher and Ruth Mathews of Wonder Lake. Those receiving regular honors (3.0-3.49) were Yolanda Fernandez, Patricia J. Lar^ki and Gary Harrison, all of McHenry. On MCC's grading system, 4.0 is equal to "A" and 3.0 is equal to "B". All summer session students are considered part-time. Part-time students are eligible for award of honors only during those semesters in which they complete a multiple of 12 semester hours. Eligibility for part-time honors does not occur every semester, regardless of grade point average. T[Mn]S~ NEWS WONDER LAKE CLUB Lt. Gov.
