The young of many ichneumons and braconids for example are, upon emerging from the egg, capable of seeking out suitable hosts, even though such hosts may be residing deeply con cealed within the tissues of plants. The life cycle of gall causing insects is often rather complex. The tiny oak cynipid not only fakes two full years from the time egg laying occurs until the adult stage appears, but also causes galls on both the roots and shoots. But what of the galls on your plants? Since the condition is the most serious, let me begin with your roses. Apparently caused by the motile, rod- shaped bacterium Agrobac- terium tumefaciens, crown gall, also known as crown rot, root knot, root tumor, cane gall, black knot, and plant cancer, occurs on a diverse variety of plants spread over more than forty families. Its long list of hosts includes blackberry, raspberry, and other brambles, as well as grape, rose, apple, apricot, cherry, peach, almond, w a l n u t , h o n e y s u c k l e , euonymus, aster, daisy, beet, tomato, and turnip. Ranging up to several inches or more in diameter, the galls are usually rounded and rough surfaced. Although they generally appear near the soil line, commonly at the graft union on roses, galls have been reported on roots as well as aerial plant parts. The close analogy of the unorganized cell growth in these galls to the wild cell proliferation in human cancer has intrigued scientsts for many years. After considerable research, the bacteria were shown to gain entrance into the plants only through fresh wounds. In nurseries and or chards, injuries by nematodes, the plow, disc, or hoe frequently provide suitable infection courts. Although many claims have been made regarding the longevity of Agrobacterium tumefaciens in the soil, recent findings indicate that the bacteria are unable to survive in the absence of host plants for more than a couple of years. Since the pathogen requires living tissue, infected plants are seldom killed. They do, however, tend to become highly Handbook Or I l l i no i s Government Available e r r More than one-half million students of government in public and private schools throughout the state will soon be receiving a new edition of the Handbook of Illinois Government, according to Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett. In cooperation with the office of Michael J. Bakalis, Superintendent of Public In struction, the Handbooks are being distributed through Regional Superintendents of Educational Services. Revised and printed every other year by the Secretary of State's office, the 1973 Hand book is 132 pages, covering all forms of state government and history. "We are pleased with the quality and appearance of the new Handbook," Howlett said. "Some new features have been deformed and show pronounced growth retardation. For home gardeners, rigid exclusion of all suspected planting stock is the very best method of control. At all times, care should be taken during cultivation not to wound the stems. Since the bacteria thrive best at a high pH (6.0 & up), the addition of lime to the soil favors the growth of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Infected plants should be rogued out, and the area spot treated with a soil sterilant like vapam before another host species is planted. The galls on both your maple and oak are caused by insects. The former is the result of an insignificant mite, while the latter is probably the work of our previously mentioned friend the oak cynipid. Forget them both. Neither causes the tree any harm. Should you have a question on the material covered, or just a horticultural point of in formation you would like verified, why not drop me a line. Suggestions on future topics are always appreciated. added which should be beneficial to junior high and high school students." One of the new additions is the Constitution of the'United States which is included along with the Constitution of the State of Illinois. "Another plus is that the Handbook was published for less money despite substantial increased paper and printing costs in the past two years," Howlett added. "One million books will average 16.1 cents per copy, compared to 17Vz cents per copy of the last ,Handbook printing." The Handbook includes history of Illinois and State Capitols, the Great Seal of Illinois and the election process Backgrounds of all elected officials are listed in addition to code departments of the state and their functions as well as non-code department agencies, boards and com miss ions . ifjioyment, Payroll Figures In Census Report Employment in the private sector of the Illinois economy totaled 3,577,217 in March, 1972, an increase of 55,634 from March, 1971, and payrolls amounted to $7.37 billion, up $719.7 million, according to a report issued this week by the Bureau of the Census, Social and Economic Statistics ad ministration, U.S. Department of Commerce. Cook county had the largest employment, 2,152,918, an increase of 1.083; and payroll, Complete information of the General Assembly, along with pictures of all present legislators is one of the Hand book features. The Illinois Judicial system is explained in detail, with the names of all current judges. Copies of the Handbook are available by writing the Secretary of State's office, Springfield. $4.73 billion, up almost $417.7 million. The report, County Business Patterns, 1972, Illinois is the latest in a series of annual reports providing first quarter economic statistics for states and counties. It presents data by detailed industry classification on mid-March employment, first quarter taxable payroll, and the number of employment size of reporting units for those private, non-farm business firms reporting to the Social Security administration under the Federal Insurance Con tributions act (F.I.C.A.). A' special mail survey is con ducted to obtain industry and county detail not reported to the Social Security ad ministration. Not included are employees of federal, state, and local governments, self-employed persons, farm workers and those employed in domestic and certain transportation services. The detailed reports are useful to business and govern ments in administration and planning, analyzing market potential, setting sales quotas and budgets, and measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs. Information by county and by indift^y will be available at cost 6n punchcards and com puter tapes from the Economic Statistics and Surveys Division, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D C. 20233. McCullom Lk. Kd. McHenry ! THINK ABOUT IT! f BY BOB JUSTEN It seems only a few weeks ago, instead of months, most of us were asking others, "What are you going to do on your vacation?" Vacation time was just around the corner. Now the corner has been turned - for most of us. We hope those of you who vacationed in resort areas..beaches..golf courses..boating, fishing..inns, hotels and motels..camps..family reunions..in different cities and states had a wonderful time, filled with fun and unforgettable pleasant experiences. And we hope you did not have to unpack the first aid kit! Incidentally, we know (and envied) some who vacation ed in the classic exercise of sun bathing right here at home. And now, the summer vacation season is over. In the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons ahead, we hope you continue to read these thoughts every week. We hope you find a thought now and then to cause you to ask, "What does this mean to me?" We hope you can then ask, "How can I adapt the thought to myself?" We hope what you read here can, in some small way at least, relieve you from worry; give you encouragement, hope and confidence - if and when needed. We hope too that many of you will continue to express your thoughts, pro and con, to us in person, phone or letter. Your response and your thoughts give us encourage ment, hope and confidence too . .. GEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOME, 3519 W. Elm Street, McHenry, III.
