STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) U, Now comes an invitation to act as a wine taster. Sorry. We're a better judge of coffee. Not tea -- as our father used to say, "The d-- stuff is half water." High school football comes early this year. The Mundelein eleven will be here Friday night to do battle with our Warriors. So -- be ready at that trap door in the press coop you strong armed fellows. If the players have survived the hot weather practice, they should be boiled down to fighting form. SUDDEN THOUGHT -- When our grandmother was confused in her memory of an old friend, she would say, "I don't know is she dead or alive " The McHenry Rescue Squad and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District will cross bats in a softball game Sunday. Sept. 16 at 1 o'clock at the V.F.W park That should be fun to watch. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J McHenry,111. 3K.--0J44 STARTS FRIDAY * t. The Sox have done right well since they brought in that Iowa farm team. Those young guys are running their pants off in hopes of sticking around next vear. A Sunday school teacher asked her youngsters if they knew where God lived. A nice little girl stood up and said, "He lives in heaven." "Is that right, Jimmy?" the teacher asked a little boy. "No, ma'am," answered the boy. "He lives in the bathroom at our house." "The bathroom9" asked the startled teacher. Said the boy, "Every mor ning my dad stands outside the door and hollers, "My God, you still in there!" @ORAYSLAKE OUTDOOR Its. 120 ft 21, Grayslake v KinftYLAND ft A FRI.-THURS. All four team mem bers contributed to the victory with an amazing score of 39 under par for the two days. Scoring 10 runs in the top of the first inning was all the last place Rusty Nail needed as they coasted to a 23 to 5 rout. The loss brought an end to two years of Brake Parts 'reign' over the league and ends a frustrating year of one-run decisions which cannot be seen in their 8-12, won-lost record. Rusty Nail's victory brought them out of the cellar, replacing The Group. August 23 games saw the Hospital become the first team to take both ends of a doubleheader from the first place Swanson Chalet. In game on the Hospital trounced the Chalet soundly 27 to 13 while game two's score was 11-7. Ed Raske went 4 for 4 while Ray Franklin doubled 3 times for the Chalet in game one. Game two saw the Hospital's Sundby go 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead the way. Brake Parts split with Morton Chemical as both teams vied for fourth place. Game one saw Brake Parts come up with a big seven run 6th to win 16 to 10. D. Nash homered for Morton in the second. Pete Smith's 2 run homer in the 4th temporarily put Morton in the lead 7-6 but a Baldwin homer in the 6th was the big hit for Brake Parts. Game two was Morton all the way, as a loss might have put them out of the playoffs. Brake Parts surprisingly could muster only 2 hits and a single run as Morton scored 8 runs for the final 8-1 decision. Pete Smith had 3 hits to lead Morton. CITY TOURNAMENT WINNERS. Event winners in volley ball, shuffleboard, tennis and free throw shooting were presented their awards this week. In front kneeling are Rob Mortell, Tom Sharp and Mike Sabatka. Second row 1-r are Pat Becker, Tom Balchunas, Mike Sharp, Peter Prust, Tim Sabatka and Ronnie Waytuia. In the back row are Bill Rowe, Scott Freund, Tom Hutchinson, Brian Lund, Craig Smith, Dan Doherty, and at far left, Steve Cuda receives congratulations from Supt. of Public Works Fred Meyer for his efforts in handling the program. Thanks to Russ Weyland and his committee for a well run tournament. The last tournament, the Past President's Tournament, will start at the club on Sunday, Sept. 9 and run for four weeks. About 48 members have signed up for this tournament which should produce some in teresting matches. A HOLE OPENS as Rick Freund, No. 31, breaks a tackle for a sizeable gain in the Warrior Soap Bowl game. Rick, one of the Warriors leading ground gainers, also scored the TD for the Whites. The game ended in a 6-6 deadlock as the coaching staff and the fans viewed their team for the first time under game con ditions. This is the first football ever, between these two schools. Mundelein enters the North Suburban Conference after a successful tenure in the Tri-County Conference. Little is known about the 1973 "Mustangs". It is know that there was a small turnout for the early practice sessions, whether they have added to the squad is not known at this time. In the Tri- County Conference, they Jiave been at the top or near the top, year after year. If the Warriors can stay healthy this week they sould be ready. Freak home accidents over the Labor Day holiday has sidelined second string quar terback Randy McCafferty and full back candidate Steve Lane. Both Randy and Steve will not suit up for Friday's contest. The Warriors have had good practice sessions this past week. After the inter-squad scrimmage in the Saop Bowl, the coaching staff has corrected some of the bugs that were quite evident on Friday nite. The probable starting lineup for tonight's game on offense will be as follows: Ends - Roger Mroz and John Dix, Tackles - John Myer and Roger Gerstad, Guards - Kerry Decker and Dan Voight, Center- Bob Dobbertin. Bullet Bob Staley will be the quar terback, Mike Thornton at fullback, Rick Freund will be one of the running backs, and the other running back will be either Steve Hurckes or Ev Klapperich. On defense the ends will be, Decker and Dobbertin, Tackles Voight and Neal Barry, Middle Guard, Mike Roberts. The linebackers will be Rick Freund and Bob Eppel. The corner back Steve Hurckes, the two halfbacks George Hansen and Steve Kasprzyk, and the safety Roger Mroz. So let's have a good turnout Fridav night at McCracken Field and root the Warriors to a victory. It is that time again when I must consult my old "Crystal Ball" on the games being played. With the addition of Lake Forest, Mundelein and Crown to the North Suburban Conference,it may be a tough task, but we'll accept the challenge. I hope to better my 740 average of last year when I had 20 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie Lake Forest over Dundee (Scouts will be heard from in North Suburban). Zion over Libertyville (ZeeBees always tough in early season). Barrington over Crown (Broncos still the team to beat). Crystal Lake over North Chicago (Warhawks not the team of old). MCHENRY over Miltidelein (Warriors for the first time in 9 years have the speed to cope with the opposition).
