By-product of some shoddy mathematics, no doubt. If the day you are born is your birthday-- then it's undoubtedly your first birthday. And when you are a year old you should celebrate your second birthday, and be gin your second year. Of course, we are not seriously ad vocating that everybody add one to his next birthday. That would be too con fusing for certain friends of ours who are 39 and holding! But you will agree, won't you, that on birthdays we ought to be looking ahead? The only year we can do any thing about is the one we're about to live. Opportunities do a great deal more for human character than memories, no matter how fond the memories. The churches with their tremendous resources for spiritual training and growth always celebrate our children's birthdays by looking ahead. Par ticipating in the discussion are, left to right, Clifford Wardle, Jerry Dominick, John Jones and Caleb Cavins. The Bible Speaks Virgje L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry HELL IS REAL Every person must spend eternity in one of two places. Both places, heaven and hell, are actual places. There are no exits nor transfers from either place. What does the Bible specifically say about hell? The word "Hell" is used twenty-one times in the New Testament. There are at least three different Greek words which are tran slated as "hell" in the King James New Testament. These words are Hades, Tartaroo and Gehenna. Hades is the word translated as hell about ten times in the New Testament. In Luke 16 the rich man, upon his death, entered hell (hades). Hades is a place of torment (Luke 16:24). It is a place of separation (Luke 16:26). The curse of Jesus upon the wicked city of Capernaum was that it shall be "thrust down to hell (hades)" (Luke 10:15)r Jesus said he had the keys of hell (hades) (Revelation 1:18). According to Revelations 20:13 hell (hades) will "deliver up the dead". There will be a time when all who are in hades will be released. However, this release is not to set people free! "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done .good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation" (John 5:28, 29). Eleven times the Bible translates Gehenna as "hell". This is the word representing the literal hell of eternity. Revelations 20:14 states that those resurrected from hades will be "cast into the lake of fire". Of the eleve/i times that hell is spoken of as Gehenna in the New Testament, Jesus Christ himself claims ten of them. The terribleness of hell in eternity was taught and emphasized by Jesus. He spoke of it as "outer darkness" (Matthew 25:30); a "furnace of fire" (Matthew 13:40-42), and a place of separation- cursed (Matthew 25:41). Twice Jesus warned of hell in the beautiful Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Hell is as real as God himself! If there were no hell, there would be no need of a cross, Gethsemane, or even of the Incarnate Christ. Jesus said, "God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3:17). There are words of encouragement and assurance. Jesus said, "He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24). "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1a). "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). Commitment Week Observed At City Church Commitment week for the First Baptist church of McHenry is a lay involvement program for the new year, 1973- 74. The church membership will participate Sept. 16-19 in a study of church-community relationships. Related actions for the church will be discussed, which would involve it more totally in the life of the community. "We believe our church has a definite work it can and must do for the betterment of our community", observed John Jones, one of four area directors for the local church. Caleb Cavins, bus director for First Baptist church added, "There are still many homes and several communities in the greater McHenry area to which we have not been able to offer our free bus service to worship services. We want to begin at least one additional route as a result of the studies of this week". The chur.ch now operates five bus routes transporting persons to church on Sunday morning. Bus captains include Joe Miller, Mrs. Les Thomas, Mrs. Richard Duer, Garvie Gamboa and Robert Fish. McHenry Shores Mrs. Rose Lillegard 385-8501 Carnival Funds i Benefit Muscular Dystrophy Fight The second annual back yard carnival for the benefit of Muscular Dystrophy will be held at the Schopp residence at 607 S. FORMER RESIDENTS VISIT THE ZIEMETS Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Brod, former residents of McHenry Shores and well know by many, paid a surprise visit to our community recently. Stopping off to see the Ziemets was one of the items on their vacation agenda. Mr. and Mrs. Brod now reside in Tennessee. RECUPERATING Another well known resident of the village Mrs. Gerry Olbinski was recently hospitalized and is now home recuperating. Many friends visited Gerry in the hospital. Many of us know Gerry as one of the hard workers at the garage sale recently held on behalf of the village. Our best to her and I'm sure she would welcome a visitor now and then or maybe a phone call. Many small towns are divided by a railroad, several churches and mar'" nr#»iudices.
