FOUR DAY TRIP My parents, John and Blanche Blaney, came out to McHenry to mind our children while Steve and I took off on a four-day holiday. Steve and I journeyed to Macomb, 111., where we visited his siter, Diana, and she took us on a tour of Western Illinois University...from there we were off for Quincy, where we visited with former Lakeland Park residents, Mike and Suzy Crist, and their children, Tammy, Tracy and Mickey...Then we were off for Six Flaggs over Mid-America just outside St. Louis, Mo. We had a terrific time and acted The Elroy-Sparta Bike trail was just a name to me until our group of Scouts, leaders, and families planned to go camping and? bike our way along 20 miles. With much forethought, kidding, teasing and prodding I found myself preparing a menu and packing up our belongings to join in on the fun. We met as a group at All Saints church to load up our bikes and receive final words of encouragement. Our long ride up to Wilton, Wis., (which I had never heard of) was tiring but well worth it. The 2 a.m. hour might seem like an odd time to some to set up camp, but as I stood back and watched everyone work, it was very impressive especially to someone who had never been camping before. The morning was an un forgettable experience to wake up to such a beautiful sight with green hills and a bubbling brook for our campsite background. I really didn't realize just how beautiful our country is. Breakfast outdoors was delicious and again everyone pitched in to help. As we prepared for our bike ride that morning, I had second and third thoughts of riding 9 to 10 miles in one direction with long, dark tunnels ahead too, but I had received lots of en couragement such as, "keep smiling". Leaving the campsite up a rather steep street in town and going through town was a tense time for my younger daughter who had just learned the art of bicycling. But once on the 2 percent upgrade trail, we had to try to keep up with her. In fact she acquired the name of "Hot Rod." The trail ride was beautiful with clear, sparkling springs to cool off with, rolling farm lands out of this world and long, dark like a couple of kids. Before we knew it we were headed to points north and home where it is always good to be! We had a marvelous four-day trip, just enough to recharge our bat teries! ! train tunnels which also cooled us off. The second tunnel we came to seemed endless and my children and I chickened out one-fourth of the way through only to turn around and get a head start back. By the way, weren't those generator lights great as we walked our bikes through the tunnels? I understood that some of the Scouts and more energetic adults went on to Sparta and found a cave-like air shaft which railway workers used a century ago both for ventilation and for hauling out rock over this gigantic tunnel which my family and I retrieved from. Lunch along the way was most relaxing and then the long hot ride and-or walk back was also unforgettable. Oh don't think I'm complaining, I really do look forward to next summer and doing it all again. That swimming pool at the camp was most inviting, wasn't it, after our exhausting ride back? That night as we all finally settled down after popcorn and a campfire I thought over my happy weekend. That is why I wanted to say "Thank you Pack 452 and Troop 128 for a most beautiful and relaxing weekend. "Sincerely, "Marie Sowiak "Secretary of Cub Pack 452" Many From Area Awarded Degrees At NIU Northern Illinois university at DeKalb, awarded 3,132 graduate and undergraduate degrees in June to students who c o m p l e t e d d e g r e e requirements at the end of the 1972-73 academic year.
