Swanson Chalet Wins 12 Inch Championship CtitnMrAn _ ... 1 A 1 Marian Central Cross Country In Full Swing PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1973 Swanson Chalet copped the McHenry Area Industrial League 12 inch, slow pitch championship last Thursday. A hard fought come-from-behind victory under threatening skies earned them the championship trophy. The final score, Swanson Chalet 12 - The Lakers 11. Earlier in the week Swanson's beat The Lakers 16-9 giving them a clean sweep in the best 2 of 3 series. In the final game The Lakers came out hitting and it looked as though they would even the series at one victory apiece. Denny Harrington led off with a single followed by two doubles to Fredericks and Dohr. After a flyout Kevin Harrington socked a homerun to left center and the Lakers had a 4-0 lead. The second was another big scoring inning for The Lakers as 5 runs came across giving them a convincing 9-0 lead. Sommers doubled to lead off followed by a line drive to left by Lazalde which skipped by the left fielder for 2 runs. D. Harrington hit another single followed by Fredericks second double and a 2 run single by Dohr to make it 8-0. McCauley later singled with 2 outs to drive in Dohr who had advanced to second on an infield out. For the Chalet in the second Paul Adams led off with a called third ^trike and the game was looking as overcast as the weather. Gary Snell came up next and cracked a homerun to* left about 325 feet from home. Next Randy Ar- seneau and Bob Freund hit singles and after an infield out Ray Franklin doubled scoring Arseneau. Ed Raske singled in 2 runs, Bill Rudolph reached first on a throwing error and Vic Freund cleared the bases with a double to left center. Gary Fields then tripled in Freund and the Chalet was back in the game, down 9-7. Swanson's then held The Lakers scoreless for two in nings while they scored a run in the third on Gary Snell's lead off triple and Arseneau's single. In the top of the 5th The Lakers scored a run on Bergerson's double and Lazalde's single. Swanson's came back with two runs in the bottom of the 5th on a walk to Fields and Gary Snell's 2nd homerun out to center. Score after 5 innings 10-10. The last two innings were tense for both sides. The Lakers went 3 up 3 down in the 6th while the Chalet scored two more runs to take the lead 12- 10. Bill Blankenhorn led off with a single and advanced to second on Ray Franklin's single. Raske drew a walk filling the bases and Big Bill Rudolph singled up the middle scoring 2 runners. The pressure was on the Lakers in the final inning as the first two batters flied out. Chalet fans were anxiously awaiting the final out; however Johnson singled and Bergerson doubled putting runners on second and third with the potential winning run at bat. Sommers cracked a single which scored the runner from third but Bergerson racing around third with the tying run was cut down on what had to be a perfect throw from Arseneau to Paul Adams at the plate. Final score Chalet 12 - Lakers 11. Game one: Swanson Chalet's center fielder Ray Franklin went 4 for 5 including three doubles and Big Bill Rudolph had a perfect 5 for 5 night with a double, homerun and 6 RBI's to lead the way in the 16 to 9 victory over the Lakers. Paul Adams and Vic Freund both went 3 for 4 while Danny Freund and Randy Arseneau hit a homerun apiece in the Chalet's 23 hit attack. Denny Harrington and Bill Guenther led the losers with 3 hits each while Kevin Harrington's 2 doubles were the only extra base hits The Lakers managed all night. Swanson's two double plays started by pitcher Gary Fields highlighted the game, both going Fields to shortcenter Bob Freund, covering second, to first baseman Bill Rudolph. The final doubleplay snuffed out a last inning rally by The Lakers preserving the Chalet's 16-9 victory. The Hurricanes are entered in two twenty-team invitationals at Warren high school, Gurnee, and Kaneland high school. This will be a rebuilding year for Coach Hans Rokus, as Al May is the only returning letterman on the squad. The number two and three runners from last year's squad, Chuck Peasley of Woodstock and Ralph Henning of Harvard, have graduated. Rokus is counting on big things from May, who has been the most valuable player the last two years. May, a native of Johnsburg, won almost all of the dual meets and finished in the top ten in the Suburban Catholic Conference, McHenry County Meet, the Warren In vitational, and the Kaneland Invitational. Rounding out the varsity team will be Mike Tony an, a sophomore from McHenry, Jim Harrer - junior from McHenry, Mark Davis - Johnsburg senior, Mike Nitz, sophomore from McHenry, Jeff Grove, sophomore from Woodstock, Mike Miller, junior from McHenry, and Mark Aiello, junior from Woodstock. The Freshmen on the squad this year consist of Mark Schultz of Crystal Lake, and Kevin Maxson, Dan O'Brien, Ken Buck, and Bill Oakford, all of McHenry. Sooner or later, some of these suburban stores will open a downtown branch. WASHINGTON, D.C.-Hot test team in ei ther Major League for the last half of August was Balt imore 's Orioles.
