> Tambone Home On Tour Route The Civii War was long since past, the nation's wounds, we were told, had been bound up (though animosities and discriminations would fester for decades to come) and though there had been a money panic in the eighties, the nineties heralded a return to national prosperity and well being. The turn of the century was welcomed in with boisterous confidence in this country, its future, and its preeminence in the world community. Those in the middle class- doctors, lawyers, merchants, etc., were finding themselves in a better financial position so they could provide some of the luxuries of life formerly only enjoyed by the rich. Larger and more com fortable houses sprang up over all of middle America and though most of them could hardly be called attractive or imaginative, they were nonetheless sturdily and solidly constructed to take the many years' wear and tear of the typically large American family of those days. Such a house has been the home of Doctor and Mrs. John R. Tambone for the past fifteen years. It will be on the Hospitality day tour for Memorial hospital, Woodstock, Oct. 3. Originally built in the early 1900's by the Thome family, which operated a men's clothing store in Woodstock for many years, the frame house was bought by the Tambones because it would comfortably accommodate their large family and could be renovated to better fit their needs and their tastes. Extensive remodelling and redecorating were embarked upon, using the talents of widely known Woodstock ar chitects William Fyfe and Andrew Kuby, Jr., over the years. (If the exterior and beamed and panelled living room and library are somewhat reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright it is understandable because Fyfe was a Wright student at one time). On the west wall of the en trance hall is a stunning art work which the Tambones commissioned of a local artist, Kurt Wanieck. Done with iron rod it is the erect figure of a Renaissance soldier-gentleman dressed in breastplate and upbrimmed helmet, holding his halberd, which in turn holds a plant. Mrs. Tambone's long time activities in costuming for local and other stage productions was evidently the inspiration for this. Another striking art piece is a cast iron multi-candle sconce which hangs over the piano on an attractive mirrored wall in stalled by one of their sons in the library. One need only go into the living room and look around to realize that here is an unusual family with a multiplicity of interests and hobbies. The Tambones are world travelers and avid collectors with activities that range from memberships in the Chicago Art Institute and the Sierra club of California. They have such varied pursuits and continual study in areas that include drama, needlery, haute cuisine, history, art and design. Therefore, it is not strange to find an unusual but compatible blend of modern, primitive, 19th century, medieval or contemporary in their fur niture, paintings, statues, and IMMBOge BDRKIES RESTAURANT 4213 W.
