There's a ^6^nd in th' air, I noticed, these Iteys, that we haven't heard sufS^last fall. It seems t' carry th' warnin' o* th* cold days t' come. When that ol' north wind hits the high trees, laden wi' th' dryin' lea%^s, th' music foretells th' time when th' ground '11 be covered^an' crunchy wi' 'em. Th' smell >o' fresh burnin' leaves permeates th' air wi' a special fragrance,v like nothin' else ye mayv imagine. 'Twould be a pity t' deny us that experience once a year, a time we used t' look for'ard to. Wi' all th' artificial pollutions man c'n invent, seems that th' natural things, Mother Nature c'n cope wi', should be allowed, an' some o' th' awful poisons, put in th' air by man, fer commercial reasons, be outlawed. Seems t' this ol' lady, that mankind has come t' o'erlookin' th' lovely gifts wi' which we're blessed. Con centration on material things 'ppears t' ha' warped th'- sense o' values, an' 'cause all th' lovely miracles, wi' us daily, to become commonplace. His efforts seem t' ha' taken th' wrong direction, th' wrong interpretation o' progress fer th betterment o' humanity. Nature teaches us ever'day, but we don't seem t' git th' lesson. I t does me heart good t' see folks gittin' down t' the' necessity o' puttin' food away fer the winter. Some o' us ha' done it all our lives, but th' old savin', "Necessity is th' mother o' invention," rings true, when there's danger o' th' pantry a bein' empty. It's a lot o' hard work, I'll grant ye, but there ain 't anythin' on the shelves in th' local grocery store, t' compare wi' th' good things "Mom" c'n put away fer th' family, an' th' temptin' odors o' chilisauce an' picklin', as ye come in th' house, t ' tease th' taste buds. Comes t' mind, that maybe folks have t' learn th' hard way. They git accustomed t sich high livin', they really don 't realize how much they have, until it gits hard t' git. Anyway, wi' th' rustlin' o' th' Crispin' leaves, tossed on the houghs by that ol' north wind, an th' chill in th' air, peppin' up th appetites, bet there's a goin' f be a lot o' home-made ol' tashioned vegetable soup kettles a simmerin' on th' stove this year. There's nothin' like it t make ye hungry, e'en if ye're not .
