HELPING PAWS I ifr •lit THIRTEEN TO SIXTEEN - CHILD OR WHAT? "Dear Sir," the one-line letter said, "I have a problem youngster, a teen-ager." And there, believe it or not, the letter stopped - except for the signature and the address. She didn't need to finish it. What this mother meant is: "I have a problem youngster, a teen-ager. You ki\ow what it means. Do I need to say more? I and some million other parents. Now tell us what to do with him". The answer is: Love him a lot. The so-called odd behavior of your typical adolescent - moodiness, restlessness, rebelliousness, sudden assumption of dignity and importance, broken by equally sudden fits of depression and humility, long absences from home, seeming preference for friends over the family, rough- and-tough talk to parents, resistance to all shows of af fection, slovenly dress, boy- meets-girl madness, late hours all these are in comprehensible only to those parents who choose to forget their own adolescence. It will help you assist your children if ^ou can remember your feelings and experiences at their ages. Why call the adolescent a problem? He's sick and tired of hearing himself called a problem. Would you like to be called a problem? The adolescent is a person, not a problem. Treat him as a person and you'll have fewer problems. The successful parent of an adolescent encourages him to grow. The unsuccessful parent of an adolescent tries to keep can put him under a heat lamp, ̂ bim a child. Puppies may get dirty and need baths. When they need them, they should have them, unless they are sick. The important thing to know is how to give a bath, and with what kind of soap. Years ago, a flea soap was apt to be a very strong soap, with flea-killing elements that tended to irritate the dog's skin. Today there are dozens of kinds of soaps and shampoos, many of which are as gentle as those used by humans. The flea- killing soaps are also mild. The dog's fur holds heat in or keeps it out. In other words, it is an insulating blanket against rapid changes in weather. When you bathe a dog you temporarily destroy this in sulating blanket. The result is, the dog shivers. You should bathe your dog in water of a temperature of about 100 degrees which comes close to his body temperature. After the bath, dry him with a towel. You can pin a fresh towel about him to help him until he restores that insulation blanket; you can dry him with an electric hair dryer, or you Play always helps. Do not let the puppy out of doors. He may catch cold or he may roll in dirt and destroy results of the bath. STRAY DOGS Staying at 338-4091, is a mother Collie Lab mix and her 3 puppies. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC own companions of the opposite sex and ultimately to choose his own mate. The parent who thus en courages his adolescent child to grow may have his times of doubt and fear; but his ultimate satisfaction is assured, and he will bring his child into happy and competent maturity. Keep these points in mind too: Rebellion is natural to youth. Children who never question their parents' word usually grow up to be ninnies. Girls are especially con tentious with their, mothers, and boys with their fathers. There are deep psychosexual reasons for this. Couples who show their children that they are happy with each other, and at the same time illustrate sound sex models themselves -- the father manly, the mother womanly - modify the intensity of this conflict. Teen-agers always go about in groups. There's safety in numbers. They feel un comfortable about their rebellion against elders and need the companionship of other adolescents. Accept the fact that your teen-ager joins up with others, but let him know that you expect him to do some individual thinking. Never accept the argument, "The other kids' parents say they can", when your child Sign Weather Modification Control Act The Weather Modification Control act was signed by Governor Walker this week in an important effort to secure a new source of clear, pure water for periods of drought. Rep. R. Bruce Waddell (R-Dundee) author of the bill, described it asks for social privileges that you know are not right. Check by calling up the other parents. The main thing to avoid is giving teen-agers the feeling that you are unfriendly to them. The whole "shook-up" generation seems to believe that their elders are against them - which may not be far from the truth. as probably the single most, long range, important bill to be signed at this session of the legislature. Waddell maintained that House Bill 770 put within the public's grasp the possibility of controlling tornadoes, control and damaging hail that plagues crops and damages airplanes, and could reduce rainfall during periods of excess rain. "Partially controlled weather", continued the Representative, "is within our grasp, but it must be done for the benefit of all people in the state of Illinois." "Controlling an immediate volume of rain or snow that could pose a problem either in flash flooding or an abnormal amount of snow drifts is now within the grasp of the weather modification ex perts." "It is also obvious that in coping with these conditions, PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER weather modification must be strictly regulated between the adjoining states as well as within the state of Illinois." "It is interesting", continued Waddell, "that today hydro electric companies, farming and other related industries can tap this source of moisture and are making it a multi- million dollar adjunct to their present businesses. "With this new horizon, one state does not have to fear being short changed in its normal rainfall as the moisture wrung from any cloud system does not exceed 5 percent of the total mass seeded." "The plain fact is that adequate controls are necessary and are provided in this bill for the betterment of all mankind, and we in the state of Illinois can benefit by it," concluded Waddell. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28,1973 INSTALL PASTOR St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Crystal Lake will install Rev. J. Allan Mittler as its new minister Sunday, Sept. 30, at a 3:30 o'clock service in the sanctuary at 485 Woodstock street. The Rev. Mittler has occupied the pulpit of St. Paul's since Aug. 15 following an extensive search for a pastor, The Rev. Mittler hopes to have his father, the Rev. F.J. Mittler of St. Louis, participate in the installation of his son. Planning for the installation and the light buffet to follow the service is the church and ministry committee chaired by George Heck and including Ruth Henneman, Mary Sch midt and Bob Rober. If you did the job well, you can now afford to carefully and increasingly relinquish your control. It has been said that one of the reasons why our generation has such difficulty with its adolescents is that this is an age of small families. Women with a strong maternal instinct and only one or two children on whom to exercise it want their children to stay children as long as possible, especially if their husbands are too absorbed in business to , give them much companionship. STEPS TOWARD INDEPENDENCE Give your teen-ager a fixed allowance each week or month - - an amount agreed upon after a discussion of his needs and your means. Then let him manage this money entirely by himself, buying out of it all the things he needs. Don't let him borrow, but let him have extra money if he works for it. Let him choose his own friends. Dictate his friendships, and he may be socially shy and incompetent all his life. Parents should be certain, however, to counsel their children regarding their friendships but the ultimate decision must be his. Let him make the final choice of vocation. You may help with information and some degree of guidance, but the final choice must be his. Finally - and this seems the most difficult for some parents - let him be free to choose his A male kitten, 8 weeks old, white with black spots, medium length fur is at 459-8163.
