PAGE 8--PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3,1973 m Lake Forest Scouts Spoil Warrior Homecoming, 38-14 By Dick Rabbitt The Lake Forest "Scouts" played the part of spoiler as they defeated the McHenry "Warriors" in the homecoming game 38 to 14. It was Lake Forest's first win in the North Suburban, but the way they played you would have thought they were undefeated. They ran around and through the Warriors almost at will during the first half, as they totaled all their points during this time. The Warriors had ample opportunity, but couldn't capitalize on the Scouts miscues The Scouts fumbled seven times, and the Warriors recovered six of them. The soggy field didn't seem to hamper the Foresters, but it sure played havoc with the Warrior offensive attack. Lake Forest returned the opening kickoff to the 49 yd. line. With the running of Philip and Burns, it took them just seven plays to score the opening touchdown. Philip went over from the 4, and Bums ran for the PAT for a score of 8 to 0 with 9:08 remaining in the first period. After the kickoff, the Warriors couldn't muster any type of offense, and were forced to punt. On the second play the Scouts fumbled and Hansen recovered. Again the Warriors couldn't get going, and were forced to kick. With Burns and Philip carrying the mail, the Scouts began to march. A 15 yd. penalty on the Warriors helped their cause, and finally with 1:08 remaining Philip scored his second T.D. Hab- jan's point was good and the Warriors trailed 16 to 0 at the quarter. Early in the second period the Warriors recovered another fumble on the 29. With Klap- perich, Staley and Dulberg carrying, they marched to the 2, - where Staley ran it over Hansen caught Staley's pass for the PAT and the score was 16 to 8. Then came the turning point of the game. On the ensuing kickoff Burns took the ball on the 35, and with a screen of blockers, raced 65 yds. for the score. Burns point was good and the score was 24 to 8. This kickoff return seemed to take the starch out of the Warriors. They did gather a first down and seemed to be on the march, but a pass interception snuffed out all hopes at this time. With 59 seconds remaining, Burns threw a halfback option pass 34 yds. to Habjan for a Scout T.D. Burns PAT was good and the Scouts led 32 to 8. The Warriors fumbled deep in their own territory, and the gun went off at the half. Burns again rambled 8 yds. for the Scout's final tally of the night. The PAT was no good and at halftime it was Lake Forest 38 McHenry 8. After the intermission the, Warriors perked up a bit, and although they could not generate any type of an offense, the defense forced the Scouts to fumble 5 times. Two of these were deep in Warrior territory and prevented scores. Finally late in the game the Warriors, took the ball on the Scout 40. Staley ran to the 26 for a 1st down. Staley hit Mroz on the 9 for another first down. Klap- perich and Freund brought the ball to the 2, where Rick Freund went in for the score with 0:40 remaining in the game. The P.A.T. failed and the final score was 38 to 14. It was a disappointing evening for the Warriors and their fans. Maybe the ex citement of the Pep Rally and Parade was too much. We'll never know. Lake Forest looked like a fine ball club. Philip and Burns, their two fine halfback, ran well. The of fensive line opened the holes and played a steller defense. Now that they tasted victory for the first time in the conference, they could be the spoiler for Libertyville and Barrington. They showed they have the guns to do the job. On the other hand the Warriors will have to snap back. They can play the role of spoilers this week at the Crystal Lake Homecoming. They are a lot better ball club than they showed Friday night. Let's go Warriors, forget about Lake Forest, let's go beat the Tigers Saturday afternoon. Put it together again, and break into the win column this coming Saturday. Stevens the Lake Forest halfback on a reverse, ran 70 yds for the score on the opening kickoff, with the game barely 12 seconds old. Stunned and confused by this run, the young Warriors didn't settle down until early in the second quarter. Once they got settled they began to go to work. On a 74 yd. pass play Tommy Hutchinson hit Brett Jackson for the first Warrior score. The P.A.T. was no good and the score was 6Three more times in the second quarter the young Warriors got on the scoreboard, as they literally blew Lake Forest off the field. McHenry Girls Field Hockey Team Ties Woodstock High 1-1 The McHenry Girls Field Hockey team travelled to Woodstock on Thurs., Sept. 27 to battle an experienced Woodstock team. In the first half, McHenry took command with a fine centering shot from Sophomore Ann Heiser which was then blasted through the goal by Sophomore Nancy Brda. Despite fine defensive work by Senior Roni Bierman, Woodstock came through with a goal in the second half which tied the game. This action is in the early part of the second quarter and prior to this play. Staley scored a TD from the 2 yard line. This conversion left the Warriors behind 16-8 and the foggy night did not get brighter as McHenry lost the battle 38- 14. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Brian Nuss scooted 20 yrds. into pay dirt for the second tally. Reilly's pass to Nuss for the P.A.T. was good and the Sophs led 14 to 6. Marching 51 yds. to the 1 yrd. line, Hut chinson crossed up the defense with a 1 yr. pass to Reilly for the T.D. Later in the period Tony Bentz intercepted a Forester pass and rambled 27 yds. for the final score of the half and the Sophs led 26 to 6. There was no scoring in the 3rd period, but late in the 4th quarter Decker, on a tackle eligible, took Don Rode's pass for a 20 yd. touchdown jaunt. Reilly to Lund pass for the P.A.T made the final score 34 to 6. On Saturday morning the Frosh lost to the Lake Forest Frosh 12 to 6, with the winning marker coming in the last three minutes. Lake Forest, new in the conference this year, came to town without a victory, but played like champions in the first half. The visitors were tough in the middle of the line where it seemed the Warriors ran too many plays. The visiting team has fellows who could scoot, plunge and execute plays with deception. McHenry had a team that tried hard, but had a lot of trouble with the "second man through" ball carrier The first half ended 38 to 8. Scouts, who had seen the Lake Forest boys perform, felt they played way over their heads. Maybe so, but we saw them as one heckuva football team in that first half. A football loss isn't the end of the world, but was a disap pointment to fans, coaches and players from McHenry's side. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Marian Central Frosh Beat Benet In Grid The team can now forget the past and look to future games. Anyhow, the band played on - - and gave us another good performance with Pom-Pom girls and all. The Cubs' great third baseman, Ron Santo, drove in the run to give his team a 1-0 victory over the Mets Sunday. He's the guy so many Cub fans want to let go. In the second game, Fergie Jenkins blew it as the Mets knocked.the Cubs right out of any chance they had of a play off series. Now, as so many say, the front office can back up the wagon. For some time it has been all over for the Sox (our Sox) until spring training. They are going to have so many great players that it may be necessary to have an "O" and "D" team -- one for offense and one for defense. It was a friendly whing-ding at Bimbo's Sunday night. Many McHenryites came in from Johnsburg Day. Marian Central's freshman football team extended their won-lost record to 3-0 with an 8- 0 victory over Benet Catholic high school of Lisle in a Monday afternoon contest. The Marian team remains unscored upon in We drove up to see the fun, but didn't hang around when we learned the Old Timers' baseball game had to be called off because of wet ground. The Roy Thompsons are blamed for bringing that California smog or dew back to these parts. The likes o' the Ray Smiths, Fred Meyers', Morrie (Jr.) Crouches, "Honky" Millers, and Tom Birminghams came in from Johnsburg. Lotsa fun! The Howie Dowells and Joe Glossons had some Words for us about the Sox and Cubs. They are waiting for next year, too. Dick Wimmer sat at the next table and advised us never to retire from work. So -- we will go out with our boots on. Saw Helen Bolton leave early. Lawrence We/lk night, you know. Saw Charlie Lasch and his daughter Dorothy, but didn't get a chance to inquire for "Mama". games to date and their crushing defense permitted Benet only one first down. Marian's first win in the Suburban Catholic Conference freshman league was again led by quarterback Jay Craig and running backs Mike Gibbons, Mark Le Blanc, and Dave Croak. Offensive line blocking was superior against Benet with guards Steve Sankey and Mark Barronger looking especially strong. Marian tallied its lone touch down in its second offensive series on a pass from Craig to end Paul Burg of Hebron. The extra point was earned on a scamper around right end by running back Le Blanc. Marian's next action on the freshmen level is against Immaculate Conception (Elmhurst) and the team has high hopes of moving its record to 2-0 in league play. The Marian freshmen are coached by George Par- themore and Father Jjftnes Larson. Onion On Windshield?
