4 McCullom I ̂ake Gerry Milbratz J85-8543 Help Needed To Finish Building Village Hall Committees formed at Wednesday's special village hall meeting are seeking asseistance from all village residents. First is the actual finishing of the building. Since the contractors are finished, and the rest of the construction must be done by the village, there is an urgent need for volunteer workers. Inside walls have to be put up, electricity and heating installed. Plus painting and decorating. Anyone able to help is asked to contact Terry Jordan, Ray Lary or Allen McKim. s It is hoped that some materials can be donated. Irene Johnson, Barbara Reiter, Karen Parks and Donna Gates, as representatives of the two women's organizations, have agreed to work together in raising funds for materials not donated. A satisfactory, workable floor plan is being looked into by Alan Rowe, Bob Muise, Bill Walter and Terry Jordan. They welcome suggestions from anyone who might have some good ideas. Gloria Muise and I will be working on an activities program, to best suit what the people want. Anyone willing to share a talent, in the form of instructions, or with suggestions for the use of the hall, can call one of us. Donations of sports equip ment (basketballs, volley balls, table tennis, ping pong tables, etc.) or table games may be made by calling Karen Parks or Ray Lary, who will make arrangements for pick-up and storage of these items. Another meeting is set for Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. At this time, the various committees will present their findings, and ideas to Park and Beach Trustee Gene Frost, and the general public for approval. BOARD MEETING Reading of correspondence and payment of bills were the main topics at the Sept. 25, board meeting. A survey of village owned property, east of the village, was made recently, and possibilities for the use of the land were discussed. Boat owners should < consider* removing their boats from the beach area during the winter months, to avoid possible damage, as the village cannot assume responsibility. There were comments on how the village hall is being damaged by some of the kids around here. It was noted they are defeating themselves, and spoiling things for other kids, as repairs cost money, which could be going for equipment for them to use. Mr. Luto reminds youngsters, that since the building was partially funded by the government, vandalism can be treated as a government offense and parties involved can be heavily fined. Attendance was very low at this meeting, unlike the last few. Perhaps some people don't know the board meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, except in sum mer, and residents are welcome to attend all meetings. NEED POLICE OFFICERS More police officers are needed in the village. Residents interested in applying may call the police number (385-2161) for further information. FLORIDA VACATION Just returned reluctantly from a wonderful two and a half weeks in Florida are Gene and Mayda Shigley of W. East Lane. They first drove to St. Petersburg where they stayed in a motel apartment right on the ocean. The weather was beautiful throughout, and they spent a lot of time swimming. Mayda, who acquired a beautiful tan, says the Gulf water is good for what ails you. They also collected a lot of seashells for their friends' children. After St. Petersburg, the Shigleys went on to Ft. Myers and visited Jean and Ed Garner, formerly of McCullom Lake. The Garners and their sons Ray and Ed are very happy down there, and they say hello to everyone in the village. The last stop for Mr. and Mrs. Shigley was Holiday, Fla«, where they spent another week. There they saw George and Carol Gorenson, also former LAWN-BOY Sales & Service BR00KW00D GARDEN CENTER 4505 W. Gene and Mayda vacation in Florida every year, and say it's harder to come back each time. They have hopes of someday moving there for good. GALA AFFAIR The wedding of Sandy Betts to James Larkin Sept. 22 was quite an affair according to some of the people who were there. Clyde Pillar, of 5104 W. Maple Hill, grandfather of the bride, attended the reception with Mrs. Theresa Schultz and friends of the family, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Baaken of Chicago, who stayed at Mr. Pillar's home for the weekend. Also, from McCullom Lake were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brendle. Everyone had a good time at the wedding. The food was good and plentiful. The band played some old time songs, bringing back memories for many people; Mr. Pillar was a bit tired at evening's end, after having danced almost all night. The next day, Mr. Pillar, Mrs. Schultz and the Baakens went out for dinner before the Baakens returned to Chicago. A b e a u t i f u l w e d d i n g , a f u n reception, a good time with good friends. The makings of fond memories for years to come. McCULLOM LAKE CONSERVATION CLUB The lake was checked in June by the State Fish Biologist. Gill nets and a shock treatment were used to check on the condition of the fish. Many fingerling bass were found showing a good spawning. An over-abundance of blue gills may require spot treatment to control them. Bullheads up to 10" in length were at a 10 to 1 ratio to other fish. Lean 13" catfish were found. They are healthy but grow better in murky water. H. Brown, the biologist, was impressed with the good condition of the lake. Early Spring treatment of the parasite causing swimmers' itch will be attempted to alleviate the problem next year. West Shore Beach and Spojnia had problems with a heavy weed growth in and around their beach areas. A weed spraying firm was con tacted and areas needing weed control were sprayed. If the weed problem persists, it may have to be done again next year. Due to lack of attendance, there will not be another meeting until February. Time and place will be announced. The policy for duck hunting on the lake will be the same as last year. There will not be any shooting on the lake due to the density of homes. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The money raised last year was used to plant several thousand seedlings within the county as part of their reforestation project. The trees planted will in turn nourish the soil, purify the air, shelter wildlife, prevent soil erosion and provide food for man and beast. Proceeds from this year's sale will also in some way help the county's environment. The Junior Defenders are counting on the public's cooperation to help make this year's sale another success.
