Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is God, and is equal to the Father and to the Son, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is a personality and should not be referred to as "it." He is not simply an influence for good. He is as •ti&Jn Completely God as is the Father or the Son. We cannot comprehend jorz/1 ̂ fullness of a Triune God, but this is the teaching of the Holy 'Scriptures. Our God, though one in Being, manifests Himself in three distinct personalities: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Even when we "define" God as three distinct personalities, we are reminded of scriptures where this "distinction is not so distinct. Though it is usually thought that God the Father is Creator, God the Holy Spirit performed or participated in tnat creation (Genesis 1:2). In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came upon men to empower them for service (Exodus 31:3; Numpers 11:25; Judges 3:10, etc.). The Holy Spirit was often taken 1from individuals when they were disobedient (I Samuel 16:14; Psalm In the new Testament, following the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, a peculiar thing transpired. Fifty days after the Passover at which Jesus Christ was crucified, all the disciples were waiting and praying in an upper room. Jesus Christ had been resurrected from the dead and had appeared to more than 500 persons (l Corinthians 15:1-10). The ascension of Jesus into heaven had taken place ten days before. Jesus had said, "They should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father which, saitn he, ye have heard of me." Jesus spoke explicitly concerning tne coming of the Holy Spirit in a new way (Acts 1:4-5). The account is recorded in Acts, Chapter Two, where the Holy Spirit came upon the believers, each one and every one, in dividually. In the excitement of the happening, the Apostle Peter interpreted the experience as fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy in Joel 2:2:28-32 where God had promised the outpouring of His Spirit (Acts 2:17 ff). Today, God's Holy Spirit is given to all who ask for His presence within them (Luke 11:13). Jesus Christ said, "I will send him unto you" (John 16:7). When the Holy Spirit is given today it is an eternal gift. Jesus said, "I will pray the Father and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever .and he shall be in you" (John 14:15-17). The Holy Spirit is God ind welling within the believer. "He shall glorify me," said Jesus of the Holy Spirit (John 16:14). The Holy Spirit never calls attention to himself nor to his work or gifts (John 16:13-16). His total purpose is to bring honor, glory, and recognition to Jesus Christ, our Lord. HONOR OLD GLORY The Checkerboard Squares honored Old Glory at their dance at Edgebrook school Saturday, Oct. 20. School Equivalency Certificates To 8,928 Almost 9,000 Illinoisans who did not finish high school have during the past year opened the door to the opportunities available to high school graduates. They are the 8,929 adults who have been awarded high school equivalency certificates by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The certificates, based on scores achieved on the Tests of G e n e r a l E d u c a t i o n a l D e v e l o p m e n t ( G E D ) distributed by the American Council on Education, are awarded through superin tendents of educational service regions. There is no upper age limit for opening this new world of opportunity-GED "graduates" in their 70's and 80's are not uncommon. The average age of those tested last year was 28.6 years and they had completed McHENRY an average of 9.9 years of formal schooling. The minimum age for taking the test is 19 years, except in certain cases, such as military personnel or prisoners. More than half (54.7 per cent) of those taking the test said they hoped to qualify for education or training beyond the high school level. On a national level, 40 per cent of those receiving certificates do go on to some form of higher education. Others seek better jobs or simply personal satisfaction Active duty military per sonnel or veterans taking the GED test through the United States Armed Forces institute account for 724 of the cer tificates issued by the state last year, and the rest were earned through the forty-six official GED centers in the state. A total of 17,352 adults took the test last year, but 35.5 failed to meet minimum standards. These standards are established by the state education office, base on requirements for high school graduation. Can you imagine a modern k i d a p o l o g i z i n g f o r c u t t i n g down a little old cherry tree? We wonder if the White House, also, gets mail ad dressed to "occupant"?
