PAGE 6 - PI .A1NDEALER-FR1DAY. NOVEMBER 2, 1973 SPOUTS ft MCHS GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY TEAM - It was a winless season, but the gals had fun and displayed great spirit as they fought tough teams from other high schools. They ended their season with a 0-3-2 record and many of these gals will return next year to improve it. L-R are Lori Petersen - team manager. Danette Crawford, Kim Pinkstaff, Cindy MacDonald, Dawn Klassner, Angie Breidenfeld, Julie Guettler, Linda Lossman, Mary Elliott, Taina Olsen, Roni Bierman - captain, Deb Mahon, Eileen Connell, Diane Eschner, Sharal Koenigseder, Nancy Brda, Ann Heiser, Cathy Gattone and Coach Cis Morner. f (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) * Last week the McHenry Girls Field Hockey team lost to Barrington whom we defeated last year. Despite the loss the McHenry girls refused to let their spirits be dampened and are already planning their attack for next year. Throughout the hockey season, the McHenry team displayed fine skills, effort, deter mination and team spirit which | was often times mentioned by the officials and opposing * coaches. Excellent leadership -was provided by Senior Cap tain, Roni Bierman. Out standing goalie performance by Senior Deb Mahon prevented many hard shots from going through the cage. Senior Danette Crawford ended a fine hockey career at McHenry by doing a great job as a left halfback throughout the season. Next year we look forward to the returning Juniors: Sharal Koenigseder, Dawn Klassner, Kim Pinkstaff; Sophomores: Julie Guettler, Mary Elliott, Taina Olsen, Ann Heiser, Reggie Lunkenheimer, Cathy Gattone, Linda Lossman, Nancy Brda, Diane Eschner, and Eileen Connell. Angie Breidenfeld, a freshman, will be missed as a fullback next year as she is moving out of state. Freshman Cindy McDonald showed outstanding potential as a goalie and fullback. Despite finishing the season with an 0-3-2 record, the team greatly appreciated the help of Lori Peterson who worked as the team manager this year. The McHenry girls were all victors in their determination, enthusiasm, skill and sport smanship. Next year McHenry will have more experience behind them which will give their opponents "A run with their hockey sticK . MCHENRY REC. TUES. 7 P.M. The McHenry Girls Swim team hosted Waukegan on Sept. 17. The McHenry girls really had their work cut out for them as they were defeated by a score of 98-15. EARL WALSH' Warriors In Season Grid Final At Zion By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Day's McHenry High Warriors journey to Zion tomorrow to close out the 1973 season. The Warriors will take with them a season record of 2 wins and 6 defeats, and the burning desire to upset the favored "ZeeBees". Zion has been a mystery team all season. Favored with Barrington in the pre-season picks, the ZeeBees have been an up and down team all season. They will carry into the final game a record of 4 wins, 3 defeats, and 1 tie. The ZeeBees have 15 returning lettermen, led by their fine quarterback Doug Hiaat. He is the leading passer in the conference with 12 touch down passes. His favorite targets are ends, John Caples, and John Bowles. This passing attack, balanced bv the run ning of Andy Kimbrough, give them a potent offense if they can get untracked. Last week they defeated highly regarded Mundelein 13 to 0. Meanwhile the Warriors have suffered two tough losses in a row. Penalties at the wrong time have hurt the team the past two weeks. If this can be corrected, and they put on a similar offensive display this week, as against Dundee last Friday night, they can chalk up the upset of the season in the North Suburban. Hope to see a lot of fans over on the North Shore Saturday afternoon, rooting the Warriors to a big victory. THAT CRYSTAL BALL As someone has suggested maybe my Crystal Ball cracked a couple of weeks ago. Who would have thought FRI. 11/2 - SUN. 11/4 Barrington would have 3 losses, two in a row in the conference. Bill Graham, Barrington coach, said early in the season, "this is my finest team here at Barrington". This just proves that coaches are sometimes wrong, and that the Nofth Suburban is very competitive in athletics. My picks for the week are : Barrington over Crystal Lake (Tigers better be ready or Barrington will bury them). Mundelein over Crown (Mustangs still smarting over Zion defeat). Lake Forest over North Chicago (Scouts made believers out of me). Liberty ville over Dundee (Champs will win, but not as bad as everyone thinks). Warriors over Zion (on paper they should lose, but hope they got one good game left to close out disappointing season). He lived in Racine, Wise, at the time but is now in Highlands, N.J. Thought I might contribute this to your column. Thanks for picking "So I Hear" for the name of your column. I was the lucky winner of $5 in Sport goods (Roller skates, can of 3 tennis balls, etc.). Sincerely, Marian (Anderson) Reinlie Box 38 Glenwood, Fla .32722 P.S. Youngest daughter of John A. Anderson Dear Marian: It is a pleasant surprise to hear from you. Do you realize it was way back in the year 1935 that you named this column? A lot of ink has been spread since then. We don't cover the ground or cover the games as we did in those days, but still get a bang out of athletic events. So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J iOu grew up in a sports minded family that could boast a lot of good athletes. Some of our readers can't remember the John Anderson family running the Broadway Bar-B-Cue where the First National Bank now stands. It was a popular place where good friends and good sports met. Your father-in-law must be a lot of man. He certainly knocks down that old saying that "Youth Must Be Served." Suppose he celebrated his birthday out Trick or Treatin'. The $5 prize looked mighty big back in 1935. Those were different days-depression days. There wasn't much cash, flyin' around. We didn't need much. A big treat was to join the crowd at%Iohnny Karls' restaurant and shell out ten or fifteen cents for a sandwich and a nickel for milk or coffee. Thanks for writing, Marian. So many readers tell us they will write, then forget. Some threaten to write (they are mostly Cub fans). Still-- "S.I.H." Mobile Marmion Downs Marian Central In Rain 28-9 Well, since there was meeting of the ,Harmony Snowmobile Club this last week there were 4 energetic couples that traveled 160 miles to at tend a Snowmobile Meeting anyhow. NUTS? Well, not exactly, really think that they were looking for snow and thought by going to a meeting in that direction that maybe their wishful thinking mighty help the snow situation. Better luck next time folks. But as a reminder to all Harmony Club members remember the meeting at Pitzen's on Friday, November 2nd 8:00 p.m. sharp. Also all, those interested in reservations for the Michigan trip in March must have their deposits in by this meeting, or notify Norm Schultz of your desire to go. See you at the meeting. The Walt Lows Pub. Ch. The Cadets of Aurora's Marmion Military defeated Marian Central in a rain drenched football game by scoring three quick touchdowns at the end of the first half and beginning of the third quarter. Marmion's explosive offensive was led by the quarterbacking of veteran Brad Childress and fullback Jack Gartronolpus Marian jumped off to a quick 3-0 lead when sophomore Wally Bitschura kicked a 32 yard field goal after a 62 yard drive that was led by John Craig and Jon Sheahan. Marmion turned the tables quickly, however, by running 79 yards on their first play from scrimmage. Mar mion scored again in the second quarter with 42 seconds 1 remaining on a quickie pass to their right end. Marmion turned two costly fumbles by Craig and Cal Babcock into two touchdowns early in the third quarter to take a commanding 28-3 lead. McHenry's Bill Adaros closed the gap to 28-9 by forcing and recovering a fumble in the Cadet end zone. Mike Pierce of McHenry, Mark Keil of Crystal Lake, and Mike Dalton of McHenry, again led the Hurricane defense while Craig hit on 5 of 12 passes and senior running back Mark Keil ran for 67 yards in 7 carries. Marian now stands at 1-4 in SCC play and faces rugged St. Francis (Wheaton) this Saturday in an away game. Marian Central GAA Hosts Intra-School Archery Contest Some Device!
