-SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER-FRf., NOV. 23, 1973 Unified Color Plan Adds to Tree Beauty The unified look, already popular In fashion and furni ture, is the trend of the 70's in Christmas tree decoration, according to Thomas E. Shaughnessy, decoration buyer for Sears, Roebuck and Co. "Unity in Christmas deco ration is an extension of unity in apparel fashion and inter ior decorating," he explained. "Shoes must complement -- not clash with -- a dress, and artwork on the wall must be appropriate for room decor. "An Andy Warhol soup can above an early American love seat is out of place. In the same way, a random mixture of decorating could detract from an otherwise beautiful tree," he added. Four New Themes Sears has developed four ornament theme designs -- "Traditional," "Candy," "Del- la Robia" and "Gold One- Color"--to be matched with different kinds of natural and artificial trees in various home settings. "Before choosing a deco rating style, people should analyze their trees for shape, fullness and color," Shaugh nessy said. A full tree, such as Scotch pine, requires delicate decoration. The "Traditional" look utilizes delicate balls and teardrop ornaments that nestle between the bushy branches. The finished prod uct is an attractive, well-bal anced tree. The "Candy" look is most appropriate for a larger, but less full tree such as a blue spruce. The candy canes, lol lipops, gingerbread houses, Santas and reindeer are large and in the right proportion for the larger spaces between branches of a spruce. Reminiscent "Look" "Delia Robia" is a look of fruits and nuts, featuring lifelike walnuts, apples, ba nanas, oranges, strawberries, cherries and lemons with fruit garland running around the tree. The walnuts are at tached in clusters and the fruits include stems with leaves, adding lo the fullness of the decoration. This look, reminiscent of the days when families strung cranberries and popcorn and took fruit from the cellar to decorate trees, is besfsuited > for a Canadian pine. The "Gold One-Color" look is best on a deep green tree of any type. Gold ornaments in three shapes--round, tear drop and pear -- plus gold garland surround the tree with color, and when amber lights are added, the overall effect is one of unity and beauty with a delicate soft ness. Dark green and gold blend well with furnishings of any home. appreciated gifts by the out- of-doors working man.
