p Fund Raisers In Action [ Service News 3 3 •V THB OLD TIMID Lieutenant Sherry L. Gehrke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard P. Gehrke Sr., 3212 Skyway drive, McHenry, has received the U.S. Air Force Commendation medal at Griffiss AFB, N.Y. Lieutenant Gehrke, an in telligence officer, was cited for meritorious service while assigned at Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. She now serves Griffiss with a unit of the Strategic Air command. A 1966 graduate of McHenry Community high school, the lieutenant received her JLA,. From Mrs. Orpha Miller, Hut chinson, Ks.: I remember when we filled the ice house. My father ran a meat market and every win ter ice had to be brought from the river 18 miles away. It seems to me the ice house was a block long and about as deep. My sister tells me it was only half a block longhand she cannot remember how deep. degree in Spanish in 1970 from the University of Illinois and her M.A. degree in Latin studies in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin. She was commissioned in 1971 upon completion of Officer Training school, Lackland AFB, Tex. Just about everyone in our small community helped. My brother and I got to make one round trip each day riding in the wagon. The ice blocks were 4 feet long and however deep the ice had frozen that year. The men either were at the river or driv ing the load of ice in for the men to pack away in the ice house. I can remember the dank smell of the wet straw the ice was packed with, The ^ladies were busy cooking and serving delicious meals. I know not how these people en joyed the meat my father served as meat was treasured then as now. Nowadays rivers don't freeze that hard in our area. But I am sure several people remember putting the ice up for the meat shop. HSitd contribwtiont to (hit column to Tho OM Timor, Box «Jt, Frankfort, Ky. 40401.) Undertaking an almost impossible task is Patty Pickett, member of the Viscount drum and bugle corps, as she attempts to sort out hundreds of shoes and pair them correctly. The McHenry County Viscount drum and bugle corps is on its way to having new uniforms. Although >4heir rummage sale was rained out, spirits of members remained high. Corps Member Patty Picket and friends took on the im portant job of sorting out hundreds of shoes for sale. The next money raising event will be the spaghetti dinner Dec. 2 at the American Legion home. For a very small amount of money, the entire family can enjoy a fine meal with serving from noon to 5 p.m. PUBLIC PULSE (The Plaindealer invites the public to use this column as an expression of their views on subjects of general interest in our community. Our only request is that writers limit themselves to 300 words or less - signature, full ad dress and phone number. We ask too, that one in dividual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We reserve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectional taste.) ON ABORTIONS "Editor: "My name is Jamie Trosky. I live at 1406 Nokomis trail and I am 11 years old. "As we all know, all over America it's Respect for Life month. I'm talking about one subject that everybody passes by - Abortion! I think it's about time that people take time to think and do something. I think it's cruel the way f>eople think. "I saw an article. It read this way: "January 11: 'Hi, I guess you're wondering where I am. I'm in an air-tight salty sac. I'm hardly even formed'. "March 5: 'There have been some strange sounds in here'. "May 7: 'I wonder what they're going to name me -- Chris, Bob or Mark'. "June 7: 'They killed me'. "Wouldn't it be fun to see another person come into the world. "Abortion is performed everywhere in the world. The pistol our eharch gave a speech about a little boy who was hit by a car. Doctors and nurses worked hard, and saved the boy. The same hospital had an abortion the next morning. Think hard before you have one. It's only nine months of pregnancy. From the moment the sperm joins the egg, you have hair color, bone structure, skin color. I can understand if it's your first one. I've done comparing and talked to people who want 'em. "James Trosky" Here and There In Business BANK APPOINTMENT Thomas F.
