Some of the amendments rejected would have provided for: (l) A two-part referendum separating the suburban area from Chicago, and requiring that the RTA referendum must carry in both areas. (2) a proposal to provide . more representation on the RTA board from the outlying counties; (3) a proposal to provide a special referendum for Kane, McHenry and Will counties to be removed from the provisions of RTA; (4) a proposal to/eliminate the rural townships in Kane and McHenry counties from in­ clusion in the RTA for the next twenty years; (5) a proposal to prevent RTA bond holders from windfall profits; (6) a proposal to prevent the RTA from im­ posing a parking tax on private property; (7) a proposal to alert the voters that the creation of an RTA also creates new taxes and large bonded indebtedness; (8) a proposal to prevent the use of the RTA as a patronage operation by in­ serting the provisions of the Federal Hatch act; (9) a proposal that would delete the local gasoline tax in favor of a straight state subsidy. The legislation does not in­ clude any guarantee of ex­ panded mass transit service in Kane and McHenry counties, but does include a 5 percent tax on gasoline. Senator Schaffer explained he hopes the voters in Kane and McHenry counties would conscientiously study the RTA Walker proposal before voting in the March primary election. He also indicated a willingness to speak before any civic group to explain the RTA proposal as objectively as he could. The annual SRA high school placement test at Marian Central Catholic high school drew tremendous response from all areas of McHenry county as 222 eighth grade students wrote the test battery Sunday. Dec. 9, at the school. The test was administered both morning and afternoon in three-hour sections by Marian's Guidance Depart­ ment. The 222 eighth graders represent the highest number ever taking the placement test for admission to the county- wide Catholic high school. The test is used by the Guidance department and faculty as an aid in scheduling freshmen for classes when they register for the fall term Feb. 10. All fourteen parishes in McHenry county were represented by students taking the test as well as twenty-five junior high schools. The number taking the test reflects a 47 percent increase over the number writing the 1972 test. Important dates for parents of eighth graders to remember are: Jan. 11, eighth grade Activity night; Jan. 13, SRA High School placement test (make-up); Feb. 10, freshmen registration.
