PAGE «- PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1973 By BOB JUSTEN Christmas will soon be here ... A season for giv ing and receiving. A season of gladness for most of us. A season of grieving and sadness for some of us. A season of religious dedication for too few of us. A season of memories for all of us. Christmas always has been* is, and always will be a season for gladness and sadness. It has been that way since the beginning. Just as His birth brought gladness to the world, His birth also brought sadness. His birth triggered the slaughter of many babies in the futile attempt to rid the world of the heralded King of Kings. These murdered babies were loved by sad, grieving parents - just as He was loved. In our own Christmas gladness or sadness, let us pause and ponder the ONLY reason for the season; the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem. While those of us with faith know He is ever with us, let us pause and ponder what He would say if He put in a personal appearance as He sees us celebrate His birth in our varied manner. Do we give Him reason for gladness - or sadness? The answer can easily bring on our own immediate gladness - or eventual sadness . . . GEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOME - 3519 W. Prepare Your Car for Winter Getting your car ready for winter's severe temper atures and driving condi tions should involve a lot more than just adding anti freeze. The American Petro leum Institute has devel oped a check list that may help you get ready for the cold weather ahead. But first, let's look at an- ti-freeze. Today's cars are designed to use the "perma nent" or ethylene glycol type -- not the older "alco hol" base variety. Although it is called permanent anti freeze, it should be replaced at least once a year, or if your car is equipped with air conditioning, twice a year. Change Anti-Freeze Anti-freeze solutions also act as rust inhibitors and water-pump lubricants and contain additives that lose their effectiveness after a year's driving. When changing anti freeze, begin with a careful check of the condition of the radiator hoses, thermo stat, and radiator. Have your mechanic "pressure test" your cooling system. Replace worn hoses before they leak. If all systems check out, drain and flush the radia tor. Replace the coolant li quid with a 50-50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol type anti-freeze. This will offer maximum protection. Do NOT use 100% anti freeze, use the 50-50 mix ture--it's cheaper and more efficient. Do not overfill the radia- GIVE A LIVING GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS * PARAKEETS * LIVE BIRDS * C0CKATIELS * SMALL ANIMALS * BLACK HOODED RATS GUINEA PIGS HAMSTERS „ GERBILS On every aquarium in this store. 5V4 To 130 Gal. & 5 Yr. Rh. 120 385-6220 McH tor; fill only one or »two inches from the top -- if It is too full, the overflow that occurs when the engine heats up will spill the anti freeze onto the street. Check the tension and condition of your fan and generator belts. These are critical to proper cooling and battery charging. Check with your service station about the multi-grade oil suitable for winter use. Remember Snow Tires Get your snow tires put on early and avoid the long wait during the first snow fall. Park your car in a garage, if possible, to keep the en gine from getting cold. Drive on the "top half" of the tank. This prevents water condensation from forming in your tank which can freeze and plug your fuel lines. In other words, don't wait until the tank is almost empty to fill It up. Warm-Up Vital Be sure to give your car a moment or two to warm up properly, but don't let it idle for long periods of time. This can foul the spark plugs and also wastes gaso line. Remember, cars pol lute more when first started. More Tire Mileage Let your wife do the driv ing. According to Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, women average 30,000 miles on tires while men average only 20,000, with some men getting as little as 12,000 miles. Of course the area of the country, road conditions and driving speeds influ ence tire wear. Most wives don't travel 70 mph to the grocery store so maybe this explains Goodyear's findings. Many a suitor becomes the man of the hour when she asks him to wait a minute. A&W It's happening at A & W Restaurant. Starting Monday, December 17, Breakfast will be served from 6 A.M. to 11 A.M. Today, with demands of keeping emissions low and performance up to rigidly prescribed standards, the automotive serv ice industry is utilizing space-age tools for accurate diagnosis. A chassis dyna mometer under the car's rear wheels can simulate any condition a car is apt to encounter on the road. An electronic engine analyzer (upper left) can moni tor everything that's going on under the hood including emission of hydrocar bons and carbon monoxide. A visit to a well-equipped shop and any needed adjustments can assure any driver that his car is ready for the tough fall and winter driving ahead. (Photo: Courtesy of Clayton Manufacturing Company) More Vehicles Boosting Need For Mechanics Five years from now there will be a need for at least 100,000 more mechanics be yond the approximately 600,000 we have now. With more than 120,000,000 cars expected on the roads in 5 years, that is a conservative estimate. With car population growing at the rate of 3.4 million a year, there is now only one mechanic for each 170 vehicles. The ideal is one for each 80 cars. Youngs people apparently do not understand the earn ings and opportunities in the job. Average hourly earnings of mechanics in Detroit are now $6.13, with some making much more. $25,000 a year is not un usual. No auto mechanic will ever be out of work, says the industry, and when "young people" are urged to get in, the ladies are not excluded. Nothing, can be lost through politeness, so many people do not even attempt it. Advisory Committees Are Formed At Marian Over senenly-five students and adults met in the Marian school cafeteria recently to begin study as an Advisory committee on the school's curriculum. The committee has been divided into eight sub committees to study the following curriculum areas: English, Mathematic, Religion, Languages, Science, Social Studies, Pupil Personnel Services, and Facilities. Each of these sub committees has scheduled three meetings between now and Jan. 21, at which time their recommendations will be brought to the floor of the general committee meeting. T h o s e r e c o m m e n d t i o n s adopted will be brought before the Council of Adminstration. Attorney William Caldwell, a 1960 Marian Central graduate, was elected chairman of the Advisory committee, Terry Menzel, a Marian senior, was elected vice-chairman, and Sally Donahue, a 1970 graduate, is serving as secretary. Members of the Avisbry committee ar parents, alumni, leaders in the community, and students. Approximately one- half the composition of the committee are students. Such studies have been recom mended by both the Office ot the Suprintendent of Public Instruction and the North Central association. PUNCH LINE O F T H E W E E K V
