I»U;F 14-PLAINDEALER-WEDNKSDA Y, DECEMBER l». 1973 Consumer Forum By Illinois Attorney General William J Scott Dear Friends: Today marks the first in a series of regular columns entitled "Consumer Forum" which I shall write for the McHenry Plaindealer. These columns will deal with many problems and questions facing YOU, the Illinois con sumer I genuinely hope you will find this information both educational and beneficial UNDER THE TREE -- Last Minute Holiday Shoppers. Beware! Hopefully, most of you have finished your holiday gift buying. But if you have put off many purchases til the last minute, there are some pitfalls. Avoid, or use caution, in purchasing gifts in store-front shops that have "come alive just before the holidays. Often unscrupulous promoters will rent vacant store-fronts, fill them with appliances, toys, and other products -- usually inferior or second-rate - and tag them at bargain prices. Then, on Christmas eve, these promoters will "fly-bv-night " - hardly in the spirit of Santa Claus -- leaving the unwary shopper with no guarantees and only a vacant shop to which to return merchandise with which he is dissatisfied. Another variety of this swindle is the street corner peddler who operates out of the trunk of a car or from a push cart. Beware! OVER THE HILL AND THROUGH THE WOODS -- Better Gas Mileage! You do get better mileage driving at 50 mph than at 70 mph! and, in this weather, it's safer, too! But here are some other tips to help conserve gasoline. -- Try to maintain a smooth, steady speed. You use more gas each time you accelerate after a slowdown. - Turn off your engine while waiting for the children after school or for someone to dash into the supermarket for a forgotten item. Idling the engine doesn't get you anywhere; could be dangerous in snow drifts; and wastes gas! -- Slow down as you approach traffic lights. If you're lucky, the red may turn green before you have to stop -- and thus you'll use less gas accelerating again. A car with dirty and worn insides uses more gas- and also contributes to air pollution. AT THE HOLIDAY TABLE -- Unit Price Buying is Best! I don't have to tell you food prices are up. But the Attorney General's Consumer Fraud and Protection division can help you get the most for your food dollar. We distribute a small "Shopper's Wheel," easily carried in purse or pocket, which in an instant gives you the unit price of the foods you buy. For example; If there are two large cans of fruit on the shelf, one selling for % cents and die other for 91 cents, you may be tempted to buy the less expensive can. However, upon closer inspection, you see that the % cent can contains 32 oz., and the 91 cent can contains 26 oz. Using the Attorney General's "Shopper's Wheel," you would find that the fruit in the 96 cent can costs 3 cents per ounce, while the fruit in the 91 cent can costs 3.5 cents per ounce. Therefore, the more expensive can is the better buy! If you would like to have a "Shopper's Wheel," just write to - Attorney General William J. Scott, "Shopper's Wheel", Consumer Fraud and , Protection Division, 134 North » LaSalle Street, Chicago, j Illinois. < I hope you've found this first "Consumer Forum" helpful, * and that you'll watch for my ? columns regularly in the j Plaindealer. I wish you a most joyous| holiday season and a New \ ear * filled with peace, hope and love. 111 m ii i » « l CYCLES SNOWMOBIL THINK SHOW CYCLE SHOP FIRE - Only a small amount of damage resulted from the fire which broke out last week in Phil's Cycle shop, 3910 W. Display Of licenses & Deadline for displaying 1974 Illinois auto license plates has been extended to Feb. 15, Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett announced this week. Although state law sets Jan. 1 as the date new plates must be displayed, former Secretaries of State have traditionally given motorists additional time to purchase licenses. "Our office has been swamped with applications," Howlett said. "We had over 900,000 applications for reassignment and special license numbers, over 110,000 more than last year. These are being processed as quickly as possible." Mailing of reassignment numbers is substantially behind normal schedule. Court litigation over awarding of the 1974 license plate contract held up start of production over two months last summer. In ad dition to the record ap plications, many prefix series have been slow in arriving. "We had our schedule geared to have all early request plates mailed before Christmas, despite the delayed start, until the Dec. 12 fire in the building where approximately one million plates were stored," Howlett explained. "Although there was no damage to the stored passenger plates, some water damage will order to guarantee licenqf delivery by the Feb. deadline, all applications to Secretary of State's office ifc Springfield must be received by Jan. 15.
