POET'S CORNER THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS It was the day before Christmas and snow was^laying on the ground. Every tree was covered and white even the snowman was fat and round. Most creatures were sleeping. taking their winter's resl... Until the sun will be warm once again and spring is here.... then they will all come out and begin to build their nest. But now, it was still winter ... The woodcutters came into the forest with an axe over their shoulder and soon you could hear, those giant trees burst... One after the other, was cut down.... and then later carried away.... Most Christmas trees are waiting for every Christmas day. All year long, spring, summer and fall they hope th^t their branches and needles are green, that they are full grown, standing proud and tall. To be at Christmas in someone's house.... this is their only dream.... So, today like all the other years before the woodcutters came," to cut down the trees... Not far away from the road, in the shade of an old Oak there stood also a little Christmas tree. Every year he hoped: "This time it must be me". M1 also want to go far away, maybefiven to a city, where surely my brothers and sisters are going to be". But no woodcutters, nobody, felt for that tree any pity. And this year, it happened once again.... Nobody even looked, or just fast turned around. So very sad stood that little Christmas tree • and great, big tears began to fall on the ground. After the big trucks, loaded with trees, had left peace and silence was here once again... Just that little Christmas tree, down here in the shade felt so much deep sorrow and pain... Soon the night was falling over the land covering everything and darkness was here. Again Christmas would come - and go... "And I must wait here in my forest, for another year". Just one single star, so shiny and bright was standing so high in the sky.... It was Christmas tomorrow..."and maybe someone still could walk along here or just pass by".... With this hope in his heart, he fell asleep, dreaming he was in a great big house.... and children were singing, their eyes filled with joy, everyone was so happy, even that little grey mouse. The next morning, the sun was shining so bright and icicles were glittering like precious gold. Every needle on every tree was covered with snow so white, even Jthat great big tree, nearby, which was already so old. "Tonight, it will be Christmas again in every land", our little tree thought in vain... "I must learn and try harder, to understand, but still I can hope, maybe someone would come back again. All day long, it was peaceful and still. Just a few snowflakes began now to fall.... the snow felt so warm, but he felt a chill, so he leaned a bit closer, toward that big tree so tall. Suddenly, he could hear footsteps in the snow someone was coming down this road... He was shaking so hard and feared it might show, yes, it was an old woman, carrying a load. She walked by, without turning around, then suddenly stopped, before a great big tree. "0, how I wish I also could be found, and so could become her little Christmas tree". It seemed, like she heard that little tree, sigh.... because she came back - right over here -. He watched her anxiously and could see a tear in her eye, and forgotten were all his own pains and fear. Carefully she beds that tree on her sled, and soon the forest and trees stay behind. By a small house, painted in white and red, she carries our litle tree, inside. It is Christmas Eve now, in every land, and we can find a beautiful tree, everywhere. Peace and good will toward all mankind and also people should learn more to care.... Oh, how he enjoys this great moment in his life, the beautiful ornaments begin to glitter in the light. "I am so very thankful,to be still alive...", and he listens devoutly to that song . "Silent Night", (by Maria Heiser) Representatives Will Speak At Area School When Big Hollow Middle school students return Jan. 7 from their Christmas break they will be visited by Illinois State Rep. Donald Deuster of Mundelein and R. Bruce Waddell of West Dundee. Representatives Deuster and Waddell will share the platform as they discuss the con troversial Regional Transit bill. The program is being sponsored by the School's Science club. Club President Scott Freund said this was the first time two state Representatives will share the platform on the same program. Inasmuch as all Science club programs are open to the public, parents and citizens of our school district are invited to listen to the two state Representatives. Donald Deuster is just now completing his first term in The Illinois House of Representatives and is generally regarded as a leading authority on transportation problems. Deuster served as administrative aide to Congressman Robert McClory just prior to his appointment to the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington by President Nixon. While serving with the Tran sportation department, Deuster was very instrumental in setting up AMTRAK, which in recent years has served to revitalize the railroad industry throughout the United States. R. Bruce Waddell is com pleting his third term in the Illinois House of Represen tatives and was a Dundee businessman prior to being elected to the General Assem bly. Waddell is a member of the Environmental committee and The Agriculture committee in The Illinois House. The program at Big Hollow on Monday, Jan. 7, begins at 10:45 a.m., when Boy Scouts present the national and state colors. Science Instructor Dick Meyers indicated that Representative Daniel Pierce of Highland Park will be invited to address Big Hollow Students a little later on in the school year. Pierce, Democratic Representative from Highland Park, has figured very prominently in education measures before the Illinois House. Health Units Give To County Rescue Squads President Norman Liedberg of the McHenry County Health Improvement association, at the recent quarterly meeting, presented a check of $100 to each of nine rescue squads in the county as a donation to help cover expenses of the rescue work. At the November meeting, officers and directors were elected for the 1974 term. Norman Liedberg was reelected president, with Mrs. Virginia Peacock continuing as office secretary-treasurer and Mrs. Lillian Seeger as recor ding secretary. Mrs. Peacock and Mr. Liedberg were elected as voting delegates to the an nual Springfield meeting to be held Jan. 8, 9 and 10, where important and pertinent changes will be made in the company policy toward giving the policy holder fuller and better coverage. The McHenry County Health Improvement association is a non-profit organization offering medical and surgical expense insurance coverage to in- Tasty -Topic dividuals, self-employed* and members of small business concerns. County HI As, which com prise the state association, are all not-for-profit consumer organizations made up of volunteers. These volunteers, who serve without com pensation, have all united behind the HIA movement to give themselves, their families, friends and neighbors a high standard of health. Plans for the 1974 kickoff dinner are being made now to get the next enrollment off to a great start.
