The Clinic Worry 1 l inls* •hhJ SMELL OF SUCCESS -- Illinois Bell's Maggie Barton, manager of the Woodstock telephone operators, enjoys the sweet smell of success ~ a Swedish crystal vase of fresh roses presented by Operator Services General Manager Elmer Carlquist. The general mfnager's award cited the Woodstock group as the top operator office in the Chicago, suburban and northern Illinois area, based on service, accuracy, efficiency and good management. Susan Ward, le§[, and Eileen Luedtke, two of the fifty operators on the Wood- stik-k force, signal, "We're number one!" Local Student Recognized On President's List daughter of Weight, 510 Xinda Wright Turnroth, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd 5108 West Fountain, jHenry, has been named to President's list at North ltral college in recognition her scholastic achievement ring the fall term of the 1973- 74 academic year. She is among the 103 students named to the list by Dr. Arlo L. Schilling, president of the college. Mrs. Turnroth is teaching second grade at Prairie Elm school in Naperville as a part of her requirement for state teacher certification. A 1970 graduate of McHenry Community high school, Mrs. Turnroth is a senior at the four- year, coeducational liberal arts college located in the west suburban Chicago area. To be eligible for the President's List a student must be enrolled for at least 2 5 course units during the term and earn a grade point average of at least 3.700 for that term or a cumulative average of 3.500. Grade points are awarded for completed course work on the basis of four for an "A", three for a "B", two for a "C", and one for a "D". Howard may shock the education "establishment" but he is correct. We need to stop thinking in terms of "quantity" and stress "quality" education! The number of degrees a teacher has often retards his success as a classroom motivator of pupils! And million dollar science halls don't make Einsteins any better than the old one-room brick schoolhouses! By - George W. Crange, Ph. D., M.D. CASE M-592: Howard H., aged 34, is a school principal. "Dr. Crane," he confessed, "I think our educational system is afflicted with degree-itis! "For our large city schools now try to have 70 percent of their high school teachers with a Master's Degree. "Yet many of the faculty with the most degrees are the poorest in the classroom. "Maybe this emphasis on advanced degrees is a reflection of the accreditation fad of colleges, which now demand a minimum number of thousands of books in the college library or that college is downgraded. "Yet I have found that few college graduates ever read even 12 extra books in addition to their classroom text, despite 4 years at the university. "Why stress a school library's 'quantity' of books and the 'number' of degrees of the faculty instead of 'quality' teaching by dedicated lovers of children?" FADS IN EDUCATION Howard is certainly correct, for most of you readers who attended high school and college, will remember that 4 your best teachers were not necessarily those with the most degrees. In fact, at the college level, the best teachers in the classroom are often young instructors, not even holding a Ph. D., but who "relate" to the students and understand their problems more vividly. Actually, a college library might not need more than 1,000 books to rival any graduate of Harvard or the other richly endowed universities in the quality of its graduates. For buildings don't teach! Neither do million dollar science laboratories! Or glutted libraries! It is dedicated men and women who transfer ideas from their own heads into the eager minds of devoted students. And if the teachers love kiddies and enjoy molding the lives of teen-agers, they can do a superlative job in grade and high school with no more than 2 years of college! The definition of a college used to be stated as: "Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and the student on the other!" A man or woman who truly likes children and has a missionary devotion to pedagogy, can be a far better teacher, after but 2 years in a standard teacher's college, than the usual Ph. D. college professor. Here's the logical ex planation : The student who chooses pedagogy as his career, thus takes special courses in child and adolescent psychology, plus other practical classroom topices. But the PhD. may never have had even a single 3-hour course in the entire field of teacher training^ Yet if he wangles a Ph.D. from some notable university, and has a letter of recom mendation from his Dean or head of the department, he will be hired to teach at the college level, though he never had a Santa's Schedule •'% w - • * (intheKty park) Monday-Friday, December 17-21 6:00 - 8:00p.m. Saturday-Sunday, December 22-23 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. SONY HP-310 obl ---M > Music Power 40 watts (EIA). > 3-speed BSR auto/manual turntable. • SONY crystal cartridge with diamond stylus. "Although I saw only those units who delivered patients to McHenry hospital, I am very sure the same high degree of professionalism and dedication single course in public s p e a k i n g , e d u c a t i o n a l psychology, etc. You readers don't realize it, but the average college professor can't even teach in your grammar or high schools! For he lacks the professional preparation. He didn't take the specialized courses that prepare a student to be a superb teacher! And this drain on taxpayers for multi-million dollar con solidated schools is just a part of the modern expensive fad- dism in education. The graduates of these costly schools can't read or write or use mathematics as well as those of the old one-room school houses! BS Degree To Peter Benoy Peter E. Benoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin N. Benoy, 316 Shepherd Hill, McHenry. received his bachelor of science degree in aeronautics at the fall trimester commencement exercises of Parks College of Aeronautical Technology of Saint Louis university, which were held Dec. 17 on the college's campus in Cahokia, 111. He majored in aircraft maintenance engineering. While at Parks, Benoy was a member of the student branch of the aviation division of the Society of Automotive Engineers. was seen by the staff members of the other hospitals. To _anyone monitoring the radio system it was evident that members of the rescue squads had prepared themselves for this type of a situation and were responding to calls at times when no other vehicles were capable of using the roads. We are all very fortunate to have fellow citizens of this caliber. "Robert E.
