/k I' U.K 15- l»LAI\ljK.\LER-FRIDAY. IWl AHY I. I»7I The Bible Speaks Virgfe L^Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, Mchenry FAITH RESOLUTIONS. There is related in the book of Second Kings, a situation in which God miraculously rewarded a sjgiple act of faith. There was a widow who had two sons. Her huslrand had been a faithful preacher of Jehovah during his lifetime. When he had died, either through debts which he had left or through the inability of the wife to provide for her family, there came a time when the widow could not pay her debts. Creditors came to collect, and when material goods were not available, they demanded the sons of the widow to be sold as bondsmen. The widow, in desperation, went to Elisha, the prophet of Israel. • Elisha, at God's direction, gave the widow explicit directions. "Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. And when thou art come in, (to thy house) thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels (from the single pot you now have) and thou shalt set aside that which is full" (II Kings 4:3- 4). The woman did as directed, and miraculously all the borrowed containers were filled. Elisha instructed her to sell what was needed to pay the debt and to live on the rest, she and her sons. Thinking of this ancient situation of human-divine relationships, I am reminded that we all have empty vessels at our disposal which need to be presented before the Lord for filling during 1974. For example, I think of the "vessel" of communication (prayer) with God. All Christians know by first hand experience many of the blessings of prayer. Yet we have claimed only a few of the many promises He has given to all believers to make up our empty vessel. We should resolve during the new year to find these prayer promises from the Holy Bible, and let them make up the empty vessel of prayer which we would present before God for filling, (i.e. prayer promises: Psalms 91:15; Isaiah 58:9; Luke 11:9; John 15:7; I John 3:22; etc.) . There is the "vessel" of God's instruction concerning fellowship with other Christians and of worship of Him. Congregating to a specific place of worship and fellowship is in God's plan for a Christian. He instructs us to remain faithful. These relations become empty vessels to be filled by God, as faithful to His Word, regularly worship and fellowship with one another, (i.e. Ephesians 5:25, Hebrews 10:25; I John 1:6-7; Jude 19; etc.) Thra-e is the empty "vessel" of the command and connected promise of the giving of the tithe. A tithe is a completion of the Commitment to return to the Lord's church one-tenth of all fnaterial incftase. (i.e. Genesis 28:22; Malachi 3:9-11; Matthew 23:23; I Corinthians 16:1-2; etc.) There is the empty "vessel" of service, such as visitation or teaching. (See: Hebrews 5:12-13: James 1:27; Matthew 10:42: Matthew 25:34-40). Reflecting upon the situation of the widow, her blessing was determined solely by her obedience. Her obedient act showed her faith and the Lord could then provide. Jehovah has made promises to believers concerning prayer, worship and fellowship, giving, and service. Our lot is to gain knowledge of them and then place them before God in faith It is the experience of this writer that the promises which God makes are always kept, when we claim them in faith. What more worthy and rewarding resolutions could be made than one or all. of these for 1974° • •'J'w • HOW CAN I? • »'|l» 5̂ n* Jp By Anne Ashley Q. How can L best extract juice from an onion? A.
