Faculty Evaluation To Begin At College When Linda Fort and Alan Phalin are asked to evaluate their instructors this week at McHenry County college, they will be most happy to do so. The two have been members of the Merit Task force, a committee which designed the evaluation form MCC students will use to appraise the performance of their instructors. The membership of the group includes the two students; John Adelmann, counselor; James Wille, instructor of accounting; Robert C. Bartlett, dean of instruction and Richard H. Fuhler, associate dean of in struction. The student evaluation will be only a part of the overall evaluation of instructors at the college. Also included will be an evaluation by the teacher himself and one by the ad ministration. The same committee will also work on these aspects of the evaluation. "When I became a member of the committee, I wasn't sure what part I would play - I soon found that my role was an important one," said Ms. Fort. "We spoke to many other students, seeking their input on what instructors should be judged on. Their first question was whether or not their evaluation would make any difference," said Phalin, a sophomore from McHenry. According to Phalin, he told students - that if he didn't believe that student evaluation would make a difference, that he wouldn't take time to work on making that evaluation more valid. "We questioned many students and found that most were concerned that the in structors communicated clearly. Many of the questions that were received from students are now incorporated into the evaluation form," said Ms. Fort, a sophomore from Crystal Lake. "It certainly would be irrelevant if the evaluation questions didn't cover the questions that students really care about," she added. The students both stated that it is the hope of the committee that it will help to further improve the teaching at MCC. According to Dean of In struction Robert Bartlett, the Merit Task force has a Feb. 1 deadline to present an evaluation procedure to the faculty association. "This was stated in the Professional Negotiations agreement last year. It has a twofold purpose: to provide an improved basis for instruction and to give data for merit decisions." he said. The evaluation will be done for full-time instructors this semester, and will be expanded to include both full and art-time teachers during the spring semester. "The spring semester evaluation is the one that I'm interested in -- we, will be able to see if this semester's evaluation actually helped instructors to identify their strong and weak points. If there is improvement between semesters, we will know that the work has been worthwhile," said Phalin. 4-H NEWS J rib. 10th ANNUAL * CAMPERS SHOW Free Refreshments - Free Door Prizes OPEN YOUR DOOR TO 74 At America's No. 1 Midas R.V.
