THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER SERVING THE CHAIN-O-LAKES REGION SINCE 1875 VOLUME 98 NUMBER 48 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1974 20 PAGES FIFTEENtENTS Crashes Claim Two Lives, Injure Many This was the accident scene at Ringwood road, near the American Legion clubhouse, last Friday morning after the collision of a CRASHES CLAIM TWO RICHARD B. ZELLER A 22-year-old former McHenry man died early last Saturday morning, Jan. 12, in an auto accident in Texas. He was Richard B. Zeller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Zeller, Jr., of 702 S. Rt. 31, McHenry. No details of the crash were immediately available. The family learned that the ac cident took place near LaGrange, Texas. The young Mr. Zeller was one of four passengers in a car that left the road and struck a tree. He died two hours later in a hospital. Also riding in the car was Mike Lyons, son of Mr.? and Mrs. John Lyons of 1007 River road, McHenry, who reportedly was able to leave the hospital after treatment. The accident victim was graduated in 1968 from Marian Central high school. After two years of service with the Air Force, he was discharged last March from Bergstrom A.F.B., Austin, Texas, and returned to McHenry. During the summer he managed a Little League team locally. Last Dec. 1, with two friends, Mike Lyons and Tom Brittain of McHenry, he returned to Texas. Brittain was not in the car when the accident oc curred. (Continued on page 19) If no other good comes from the energy crisis, it serves as copy for the news media. After almost a week of rising in darkness, we sent out a reporter and photographer to a McHenry shopping area for a consensus. Because the mor ning blackness has been so distasteful to us, we felt the whole country felt the same. Apparently not, for the opinions were about evenly divided. Perhaps we only adjust slowly to change, but our first rude awakening to the world of darkness came to a loud blast of the alarm clock pn Sunday morning. It was 7:30 a.m., but we just couldn't find the clock to shut off the alarm. The second offense to our sensibilities came when we reached the first floor of the house and turned on the lights. Squinting into the natural light of a rising sun is one thing. Trying to open the eyes abruptly on a 100-watt bulb is another. The next step was stumbling back upstairs for some apparel we had left on a chair the night before. There was just no way of seeing it without using the feeling process, so completely immerskl in night were we when the day started. Then there was the dark garage, which seemed con siderably colder than usual just (Continued on page 19) school bus and a car. Nine children and two teen-agers were hurt. §TAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD ELEVEN YOUTHS INJURED Nine children and two teen agers were injured in a Special Education of McHenry County school bus-auto accident which occurred Friday morning about 8:15. Treated were Debbie Walters, Melinda Kennedy, Diana and Lorenzo Alvarado, Hope Estrada, Charles Gordon, Randall Jacobson, Michael Bassett and Joey Beslich. No statement was available from Watkins due to his facial injuries. His passenger, Hansen, told officers they were south-bound on Ringwood road. They pulled out to pass the auto in front of them and collided head-on with the school bus which had pulled onto the roadway from Orchardway drive. Mrs. Loser said the school bus was north-bound after havings just turned onto Ringwood road when she saw the Watkins car proceeding south in back of another auto. Watkins suddenly pulled out to pass the auto and collided head- on with the bus. Robert J. Shulda of 512 W. Bald Knob road, McHenry, lost control of his auto after a snowmobile driven by James P. O'Brien of 3708 N. Weingart road, McHenry, came onto the road in his lane of traffic. Shulda was west-bound on Rolling Lane Sunday afternoon when the mishap occurred. When the snowmobile ap peared in his lane, Shulda applied his brakes, swerved, lost control on the icy road and hit a cement pillar. O'Brien said he came out of a field and stopped on the shoulder of the road where he saw the car skid off the road way. O'Brien was ticketed for illegal operation on a highway. Rieb's auto was east-bound on the highway when it crossed over into the opposite lane and struck the parked auto. Rick L. Krieghbaum of 3105 Lincoln road, McHenry, was ticketed for no valid driver's license Friday afternoon. He lost control of his pickup at 2518 W. Lincoln road due to the icy roadway and slid into a ditch. A two-car accident on Route 120 and Charles street east of the bridge, resulted in a ticket being issued to Elmer G. Odom of 302 N. The board also established a construction trust fund at the First National Bank of Woodstock as requested by the Capital Development board (CDA). This will make it possible for the college to earn interest on the Phase I con struction monies until it is actually paid out to the con tractor. The CDA is the governmental agency which oversees construction. The revision in the budget was necessary when bids came in and exceeded the $4,902,000 designated for the project. The extra $344,150 will be taken from local funds allocated for the second phase of con struction and applied toward the first phase. The budget overrun was caused by the state's twenty- month delay between budget approval and project bidding. When the college undertakes Phase II construction, the money will be counted by the state as credit for the matching of state funds. According to Dr. James R. Davis, MCC president, several changes were made in campus plans because of the high bids. When contracts are let, the greenhouse will not be included but will be redesigned and built later. "The television studio iMH not be finished as uras previously planned but will be roughed in and expanded in the future," Davis said. The revised budget must be approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Illinois Community College board before contracts can be let.
