Not by car; this time we go by Amtrak. One of our fellow parishioners, Bill Lang, volunteered to take us to Fox Lake to catch the train so we would not have to change depots in Chicago. It worked well 'til we tried to get off the train. We had several pieces of baggage; more than enough. When we go by car the trunk looks like Fibber McGee's closet but you have to cut down on the train. We had three main pieces of luggage and several smaller ones. When we got to the Union Station we waited 'til everyone was off the car so we wouldn't be a pest to our fellow travelers. Ha! They fooled us and turned off the lights. In close to total darkness we disembarked. Here we were aided by an expensive con traption Mrs. Hanner gave me for Christmas one year. It comes in its own bag. You pull out a telescopic handle, screw in solidly together and into a base with two inch rollers. Here you rest a suitcase or two or three, secured in place by a long heavy elastic cord or cable. Now you can trundle this contraption loaded across blocks of Union Station. Hazards in the form of cracks or steps block you from time to time but elderly, obese car diacs can cover quite a bit of territory when they are equipped with one of these "luggage conveyers". It is a sort of baggage kiddy kart. Time passed and we boarded the train. Old train travelers rue the passing of some of some old time luxuries but train travel is still fun. The train we were on was once the old Sante Fe Chief. The diner still bore some of the old service marks. There was the red carnation, the clean white tablecloth that always gets brown spots when the train lurches after the coffee is served. The attentive waiter backed up by his steward stood ready with tray and napkin. Shrimp cocktail with peppery hot sauce, colossal ripe olives, water melon pickles, peas in cream, generous salad, a baked potato, two great big thick broiled lamb chops, hot fudge sundae and an individual bottle of champagne (and oh yes, soup to start), $5.75. After dinner, up to the dome car where in big reclining seats we watched the stars move about as the train wound its way west. Through the little towns we sped where the crossing bells clanged and the lights blinked red in a swirl of dust and snow. It was pleasant to sit relaxed in the swaying dome as we sped to new scenes and old friends. Some one ought to describe life in a bedroom on a moving train. These bedrooms are not all alike, but this time ours had two beds, one above the other running crosswise of the car. A ladder gives access to the upper at the price of some of the wee floor area. One corner is walled off into a tiny space prettily called "Annex". When you open the door of "Annex" you find it is, in reality, the old farm outhouse moved up the lane and into a speeding train. If <me should be bold enough to be seated on its sole piece of furniture, either by need or the spirit of adventure there is hardly a place to put one's head. You almost have to sit erect. Lean forward a bit and you bump your head. I leave it to you, gentle reader, to imagine the contortions a harrassed occupant must undergo in fulfilling the end of * SELL THOSE NO LONGER NEEDED ITEMS WITH A GARAGE SALE. Phone 385-0170 ro place your ad Payable In Advance this bit of railroad equipment. But it can be fun if you enter into the spirit of the occasion. On the outside of the "An nex" is a wash basin that lets down from the wall. You push a small lever and out bursts water fully showering the washer and his roommate. If one were to clean one's den tures and place them on the side of the basin and un thinkingly flip it back into its place, one's "chompers" would be gracing the right of way in a trice and in an utterly un- findable location. Nightly chores completed, one occupant ascends the ladder to the upper berth where a sturdy banded webbing assures he will not fall out. If in the course of the night nature presents demands, feel, kind friend, the acrobatics the summoned must undergo to arise and descend the ladder in the swaying speeding car in order to get to the "Annex". Mission accomplished, one can, with dexterity, resume the swaying perch above. I shall not let you in on the secret of who slept "up" and who slept "down". The next morning I made the great discovery that thinszs went much better if I stayed in bed and let Rose get dressed first. She could then get to the dome car and rest up while I shaved and in due time joined her for breakfast in the diner. So the evening and the morning were the first day. On the night of the second day we descended to the crowded platform of the station in Flagstaff, Ariz., where we had reservations for the night. It seems that Flagstaff has about four taxis. The demand on them exceeds their ability to answer with any speed. The situation was saved when I inquired of a rental car agent how I could get a cab. *To my utter dumb founding he said, "I will take you!" He did and we were in bed in a good big comfortable motel in half an hour. He made no charge. More will be added to this tale when I can find some other unsuspecting soul who will loan me a typewriter for a space, j PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3d, lt74 For Your Information Dear Friends, The funeral director is familiar with the more common symptoms of extreme grief. He must know when a word from him will steady a mourner and possibly forestall hy steria, or when a word from anyone will trigger collapse. But such symptoms as total with- drawal-and this is not uncommon-are beyond the scope of the layman. The clergy and the family doctor will-needthe continuing support of family and friends to help the breaved over such very deep grief. Respectfully, PETER M.JUSTEN & SON FUNERAL HOME McHenry.
