I IN wmmmm HHHBH Sure, these are the questions a door raises. Jesus once said, "I am the door." His teachings have opened for millions a more meaningful, purposeful and satisfying life. Yet people still get hung up on the questions of a locked door and what's behind it. The atheist says there's nothing beyond the door. The agnostic says we'll never know because it locked. And the spiritually-hesitant just say, "I wish I knew Sheer logic says try Common sense says grasp and turn. McHenry FUTURE FOR THE LOST There are those who contend that when a person dies, he, with his body, is placed into the grave. Some say, if the person is lost, he spends eternity in the grave. Others prefer to believe that life simply closes with one's death. It is difficult to understand the confusion when one consults the Scripture for guidance. First, Jesus indicated that the soul leaves the body immediately at death. He included both a saved and a lost man in his illustration of Luke 16:19 ff. Lazarus, the saved and righteous man was "carried by the angels" into heaven. Jesus leaves no suggestion of a waiting period for the righteous. He, Jesus, promised the penitent thief on the cross beside him, "Today thou shalt be with me in paradise," (Luke 23:43). The unrighteous lost man of Luke 16 did not remain in the grave. Jesus says of him, "The rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell (hades) he lift up his eyes, being in torment..." The body went to the grave but the soul to hades and to torments. Secondly, there is coming a time of resurrection. The righteous saved will have their bodies resurrected. They are to dwell in a heaven which will be enjoyed in its fullness only by the soul dwelling within the complete resurrected body. In much the same way, there will be a resurrection of the unjust lost when their soute will be reunited with their indestructible bodies. Jesus said, "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation" (John 5:28-29). ' , We know that those who are resurrected to damnation will acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord. The Apostle Paul says, "Every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:10-11). But this confession comes too late! John, the aged apostle, foresaw the Great White Throne and those unjust lost before it. There was a searching of the Books. Their names will not be found (Revelation 20:15). They will be judged from the record of their works (Revelation 20:12). They will then be "cast into the lake of fire." <9 ' jt I do not worry what this "lake of fire" is. It surely will be terrible. But the Bible tells us the preparation necessary to escape the Great White Throne Judgment as well as the lake of fire.. Romans 10:13 states, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my com-, nandments" (John 14:15). ; L PUBLIC PULSE (The Plaindealer invites the public to use this column as an expression of their views on subjects of general interest in our community. Our only request is that writers limit themselves to 300 words or less - signature, full ad dress and phone number. We ask too, that one in dividual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We reserve thle right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectional taste.) LANGE HEARING "Letter to the Editor: "A McHenry police officer, Duane Lange, has just been discharged by the Police commission, after closed hearings marked by reversals in mid-testimony, an 11-month- old charge, and by accusations which were dismissed • in November as being too un- specific. Service News "Does the press object to having the hearings closed except for the final decision- announcing session? Does the average citizen object, or care at all? "If hearings are closed by commission pronouncement - if our Police comm|ssion doesn't have to be answerable to the public, we could all be in trouble. "If charges don't have to be substantiated by date and place, but simply by the comment "on occasions too numerous to mention", any one of us could be tried and found guilty of anything. "The incorruptability of our police is too important to let persons have control who do not want public knowledge of their actions. "Do the citizens of McHenry really want it this way - that the goings-on in the police department can be covered up by dismissing anyone who doesn't "go along" with the status quo? Does the press want it this way?" "(Mrs.) Gretchen Thomas 4401W.
