"Blizzard" Party- Held For Neighbors In Whispering Oaks (by Father Hanner) In Florida, whenever a hurricane hits, the locals find a good strong house, hall or hotel where they can hole up and wait out the storm. Following this idea the Leonard Gretzas entertained in their home on the morning of the late blizzard Feb. 22 (the real Washington's birthday). This is properly a Blizzard Guests of the Gretzas were Ladd and Betty Treskon and Father and Rose Hanner. The Gretzas basic motive was to keep their neighbors warm when the power failed and homes could not be heated. Ben piled wood on the fireplace, a convenience not owned by his guests. Sadie and Gretza's daughter; JoAnn, piled the table with emergency rations and plied their frozen guests with food and drink until all were in a happy state of warm th and comfort. High School Diploma To Young Mother "I didn't think that high school was that important while I was there. But I was a better student while taking classes at McHenry County college because I knew dif ferently," said Scarlett Dennis, 22, of McHenry. Mrs. Dennis is the first graduate of the college's "P ro j ec t Breakaway . " Through the project, those who haven't completed high school can receive a high school diploma. After dropping out of Rich mond-Burton high school at the age of 17, Mrs. Dennis married and changed roles from student to wife, then to mother. Three years later she decided to participate in the college's drop-out project, and it was determined that she only needed four credits to graduate. Although she now t lives in McHenry with her husband, Jim, and daughter Angela, arrangements were made for her to receive her diploma from Richmond-Burton high school. "Every subject helped a lot," she said of her classes at MCC. She took math and reading courses in the college's In dividualized Study Lab in addition to correspondence courses in consumer economics and fan&scaping. Within several months, she had acquired enough credits to earn a high school diploma. "At first, I felt a little awk ward about it - graduating from high school at the age of 22. But now I feel that if I tell people about my experiences that maybe I can help someone else to begin thinking about receiving a high school diploma this way," said Mrs. Dennis. "Scarlett spent eight hours a week studying here in the In dividualized Study Lab. She was determined to complete the program and this dieter- mination showed in the con sistent progress she made. Aside from this, Scarlett put in more time doing home study courses in Landscaping and Consumer Education," said Joan Collins, instructor and counselor in the Community Services office at MCC. "For people interested in the program, I encourage them to think seriously about whether or not our program is what they want. There are alternatives, but the alternatives will take more time and attention than may seem," she added. "It takes a lot of motivation, responsibility and deter mination on the student's part to reach such a goal. Scarlett is a perfect example of one who has accomplished her task," said Ms. Collins. MR.
