Just learned that Mrs. Glenn (Berniece) Peterson has a secret formula that attracts those deserters we have fed through many long winters. It's the old story. "What have you done for me lately?" THE NEWS of New York also sent Clyde a complete rundown on Fred. Never really agreed with the old saying "Blessed be nothing", but recent kidnap episodes makes one wonder. y EARL WALSH FIGHT FOR REBOUND - McHenry Warrior Tom Stark (43) and a Crown player go for a rebound in last Friday's game at Carpentersville. The Crown Vikings upset the Warriors by a score of 53-48. Other Warriors in Dark Jerseys are Steve Koerber (left) and Steve Himpelmann (right). Crown Five Upsets Warriors 53 to 48 figures, and he fouled out in the closing minutes. The Warriors close out the regular season here on Friday night when they entertain the "Tigers" from Crystal Lake. BOX SCORE By Dick Rabbitt The Crown Vikings won their first game in the North Suburban Conference on Saturday night when they ^ defeated the "Warriors" 53 to 48. The loss put the Warrior record at 7 and 5 tied for fourth place with North Chicago. Crown's record is 1 and 10. They had a makeup game with Barrington last night, due to a postponement last Friday because of the storm. : Saturday night's game started out like it was going to be between Steve Himpelmann and Crown. At the 3:30 mark of the first period the scoreboard should have read Himpelmann 12vCrown, 10. The senior guard scored the first 12 points of the game for the Warriors. McHenry went on to lead at the end of the period 16 to 12. Then disaster struck again for the Warriors. They managed to can only 2 of 17 Marian Beats Huntley In Tournament Last night (2-25) Marian Central beat Huntley 65-45 in the first game of the Marengo Regional basketball tour nament. Half time score was 27-22. A1 May and Sam Anderson each had 22 points for Marian Central. Huntley was ceded No. 1 in the tournament. Marian plays Harvard Wednesday at 7:30. shots during the second period in what has to be a poor exhibition of shooting at the hoop. The Warriors were still in the ball game as they trailed 25 to 21 at halftime. During the 3rd period the Vikings continued on their way, increasing the lead 38 to 32 going into the final quarter. Although the Warriors out- scored the Vikes in the final 8 minutes, they still could not close the gap and lost 53 to 48. The Warriors had an op portunity to put the ball game away early, but couldn't quite get the job done. Forced to play the slow down tactics of the Vikings, the Warriors just couldn't seem to get untracked. Our crystal ball was always cloudy on picking winners. This time we would have picked the Warriors without a look at the ball. Everybody beat Crown. Maybe it was the law of averages. They were bound to win sometime and came close to it against Crystal Lake. Now comes the Crystal Lake five to McHenry Friday night, March 1. The Class AA Regional will be played here March 5-6-8 according to our schedule. Antioch, a classy outfit, meets Woodstock in the first game. McHenry plays Grant, a team that lost to Antioch by only 4 points last week. ^e have home floor ad vantage the rest of the way. Let's hope we can use it to good advantage. The flu bug hit our better half this week so we haven't roamed around where the action is good for a column. We'll cut loose again soon. Clyde BlaCk^ell had a cousin, Fred Anderson, who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1909 to 1918 with a 2.40 earned run average. His nickname was "Spitball". Clyde asked us to look up Fred's record and sure enough it was in our old baseball bible. Nowadays when they refer to a fellow having a tankful they don't mean gasoline. Spring Grove, 111 * Feb. 21,1974 Dear Mr. Walsh, I read your article with in terest of not seeing any birds at your feeder this past winter. I am employed at the "Chain O' Lakes State Park" east of Spring Grove, 111. We have had cardinals and mourning doves in the park by the hundreds all winter. Also plenty of pheasants and smaller birds such as snow birds, woodpeckers, etc. We also have a herd of deer roaming thru. At one time we counted 18 in one herd. I always read your articles with great interest. Sincerely, Burton A. Stevens Dear Mr. Stevens: f Our park (back yard) is much smaller than your State Park. No deer. But, we did see rabbit tracks today. Before our cherry trees died, we had more birds in the summertime than anybody. Those robins would give us a look when we went out to pick a few ripe ones for ourselves. We aren't real bird watchers at our house. That is, we wouldn't get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to watch 'em. Maybe they sense our feelings. Next year we will send out special invitations to our for mer feathered friends - come home, all is forgiven. Thank you for writing. "S.I.H." Did somebody say this column is for the birds? (DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) Hutch's Freshmen Wrestlers End Most Successful Season By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Hutchinson's McHenry high freshmen wrestlers finished the season with the best record in the history of freshmen wrestling. They had a record of 10 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. This surpassed the 8 and 2 record of the 1968-69 team. Thus McHenry County College ended their 73-74 season on a losing note. The Scots had a cold night at the basket as they bowed to Highland of Freeport 61 to 50. The defense wasn't bad but the Scots couldn't buy a basket. Randy Blazier was the lone Scot in double figures as he tossed in 23 counters. The Scots hit only 10 of 24 from the foul line to compound their troubles. Although McHenry broke in front, a cold spell just before and after halftime spelled their doom. Trailing 32 to 25 by the half the Scots failed to ever get any closer. Thus the McHenry five ended their season with a 5- 19 record.
