PAGES - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESD AY, MARCH 6.1974 FOILED BY A FOUL. Tom Stark takes aim but the shot missed as Rich Sexton (25) collected a foul in his attempt to block the shot. Stark made a free throw on the play, and connected for 9 points for the evening. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) McHeniy Defeats Ciystal Lake Five 66-59 In Overtime By Dick Rabbitt The Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig closed out the regular season by beating Crystal Lake in overtime 66-59 Friday night at McHenry. The win enabled the Warriors to share 4th place with North Chicago each with an 8 and 5 record in the North Suburban. On the regular season the Warriors finished with a record of 13 and 10. In the opening period the Warriors ami Tigers exchanged baskets and free throws until Benson put the Tigers ahead with 1:52 remaining in the period and they went on to lead McHenry 20 to 17 at the end of the initial quarter. In the second period Him- plemann's 12 points paced the Warriors to a 34 to 30 lead at the intermission. The first warm day tl comes along always bri people out stirring around, Weather controls moods. Saw some boys flying a kite Sunday. Must be spring is here. Word must have reached certain areas. A bluejay came to call. Sunday morning brought a squirrel to feast on certain foods the birds turned up their noses at- One day this winter a female cardinal dropped in for a brief visit. Usually where there is a girl bird a boy bird won't be far behind. But, the male (the more beautiful of the species) never showed his wing. Sat between Dick Rabbitt and Ed Datz to watch the Warrior- Crystal Lake Tigers humdinger of a basketball battle here Friday night. The Tigers came to play and almost pulled an upset. Until the fire went out, they looked like a team that must have improved greatly throughout the season. The Warriors played hard, missed too many shots, made too many mistakes and almost gave the game away after a comfortable lead. But, when the happy McHenry crowd left the gym, SPORTS EDITORJ after an overtime victory, mistakes had been forgotten. Can't fault a winner. A small group of young'uns from the Crystal Lake crowd hooted and hollered while McHenry players attempted to shoot free throws. Not that McHenry hasn't been guilty of such things at times through the years: It simply is not good sport smanship. ' Suclf actions should not reflect on the entire student body. They get excited, but good manners prevail. Did you ever try to write with a 4-year-old granddaughter sitting on your desk? Must be a little leprechaun crept into our office and touched up our desk calendar. With St. Patrick's Day falling on Sunday this year, the little devil marked the 15th as a starter for our celebration. We had in mind starting on the 16th. It looks like a big weekend a-comin'. But, now hear this! The 19th of March is marked 'Kraut Day". What a letdown! Heard one man tell another, "If you want to keep up on local news, read the Plaindealer. You won't find it in the Chicago papers". Wayne Gaylord predicts, with no ifs or buts, that the Warriors will win the regional Koerber kept the Warriors in the game as they maintained their 4 point lead 46 to 42. The final period was one that some coaches dream about, while other coaches want to take the pipe. You take your pick of the two coaches. The Warriors, with Him- plemann's 8 pts., Koerber and Wanta each putting in a basket, enabled the Warriors to lead at the 3:15 mark 57 to 46. From that point on, the lid was on the Warrior basket. The Tigers managed to put in 11 straight points to tie the game at 57-all at the end of the regulation time. During the overtime , it was all McHenry* s Steve Koerber, the sensational sophomore (in my opinion the most improved player in the conference), took control of the boards, and realty sparked the Warriors to a 66 to 59 victory. Steve Himpelmann closed out a brilliant careeer for the Warriors with a 32 point out burst against the Tigers. The senior guard finished fourth in conference scoring with a 19 point plus scoring average. His total for 13 games was 253 points. The Warriors meet Grant in the McHenry Regional tonight at 7:30 P.M. The winner of tonight's game meets the winner of last night's winner either Antioch or Woodstock. An interesting sidelight, back in December l received a letter from Dave Miheva a teacher at East Campus and an avid Warrior fan. He and his wife in playing with their Ouija Board made some predictions on the 1973-74 North Suburban Con ference, The result's are amazing. Dave and Laurie picked some right, and naturally with a 10 team conference picked some wrong. Right on the nose they picked the ZeeBee's with a 11 and 2 record, and they picked our Warriors for a 8 and 5 record. They picked North Chicago to finish with an 8 and 5 record, and correctly selected Crown for a last place finish with l victory. Now I am going to put them on the spot for you fans. They have picked the winner of the Class AA tournament for the State of Illinois, a school that initials start with TH. In closing I may have to admit that Dave is better with his golf clubs than he is with his predictions. I know, I played golf with Dave who is an ex cellent golfer, I only hope his predictions are as good as is his putting. DIS; Our energy-rich diet has been cut back somewhat, but our farms and factories are operating, and we've got enough gas to get to work and enough fuel to heat our homes. What we're discovering is that the energy shortage, may mean doing with less, not doing without.. This includes boating. The 45 million of us who enjoy recreational boating aren't being asked to take up needlepoint instead. New Federal Fuel Regulations require equal treatment for all non-priority users of fuel, in cluding boat owners. You may not have quite as much as you've had before, but there are ways of getting more boating fun per gallon. 1. Shut off engine when at dock or at rest. 2. Keep your engine well-tuned. 3. Reduce speed to a com fortable planing level, don>run at full throttle. 4. Plan you trip carefully to reduce running time.
