SIXTH GRADE JOHNSBURG TOURNAMENT On Saturday night, March 2, Parkland's sixth grade basketball team defeated a very fine undefeated Johnsburg team 25-22 to capture first place in the annual sixth grade tournament. Parklfcnd's road to the championship was far from easy as they struggled to victory over McHenry on Monday and Harrison on Thursday by scores of 19-16 and 21-12 respectively. The championship game was an exciting contest which saw the lead change hands several times. The outcome remained in doubt from the opening whistle until the final buzzer. Host Courts St. Mary's (594) McHenry and St. John's (96) Johnsburg, welcomed 36 teams to the 28th annual event. Jointly hosting the tournament, for the second consecutive year, after a 5 year absence from the McHenry Area, tournament officials were pleased with the excellent entry response and spectator turnout for Sunday's first games. First round games found most of the two local courts teams advance to second round games. With 12 games com­ pleted in quarter-final play, found 6 Johnsburg teams and 3 McHenry teams win to earn berths in semi-final games this Sunday. The popular tournament has 5 different divisions, providing exciting basketball play at all age levels for all age levels. Sunday's games will find Moline area quintets enter tourney play. Rapid City, *73 Ranger Division champs, will take on 2nd ranked Silvis, following perennial power St. Gregory's game with Silvis' No. 2 team. Due to the large number of teams entered in this year's tournament it was necessary to schedule different division games simultaneously, at the Johnsburg facility. This Sunday (March 17) Junior Division (8th grade) and Ranger Division team will begin play at 11:30 a.m. Games will continue on the hour throughout the day according to the above schedule. Beginning at 1:30 play in the interesting Heavy Division will begin. Ten of the most balanced teams, in recent years, will take the court in hopes of upending St. John's No. 1 team, which has captured 13 out of the last 14 championships. St. John's No. l squeaked past a tough St. Mary of Lourdes five last Sunday and will take on the winner of St. John's No. 3 and Moline at 6:30 p.m. St. Mary's No. 1 runner up in 1973, had an easy route of their number three team and will take on the winning five from the Wilmette Aurora game. Word has it that some 250-300 fans are coming by bus from the Moline area to support their local teams, Sylvis, Moline, and Rapid City. McHenry and Johnsburg fans are encouraged to come out and enjoy a Sunday of exciting basketball and cheer their favorite teams to victory. Lunch and refresh­ ments are available for your convenience. All games are being held at Johnsburg Jr. high school, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Championship games will be held Sunday, March 24, with entertainment provided by an orchestra. Wow! That was some gamfe. But, the game brought on our annual blast at the rule makers on the five fouls and out you go rule. Most of those fouls are like a tap on the wrist to big, well conditioned athletes. v Can't thhQt of another game that boots a player out of the game for mistakes. In football the ref marks off yardage as a penalty. In basebaill there are penalties for interference, but the guilty player stays in the game unless lie says shucks to the umpire. In boxing a man can lose the round for a foul blow. If a team keeps fouling in basketball and loses points at the free throw line, that's penalty enough for us. ^ Always said kick a player out for a dirty foul that could injure another player. But, let's get on with the game instead of all this whistle too tin'. It used to be if a guard went up in the air to stop a shot and touched the ball there was no foul. We saw kej( men on both the Michigan and Indiana teams go to the bench on fouls and spend the rest of the game cheerleading. For our part, we would like to see the top players in there at the finish. Of course, it is for medicinal purposes. There will be some fun, but never the same as when Harry Conway came through our door to complain about the red carpet.
