For the ambitious, it has meant scouring local coun trysides for deserted barns and then, if lucky enough to make a discovery, labor iously treating the accept able planks with insecti cides and disinfectants be fore installing them inside the house. Now, however, one has only to visit the nearby paneling dealer who stocks a new hardboard paneling introduced by the Abitibi Corporation. It's appropri ately titled New England Barnbord, and looks enough like the real thing to pass close inspection; complete with all the distressed beau ty marks, raised knots and deep, aged graining. The total effect is further enhanced with subtle hues -- as many as five -- to achieve just the right note of realism, color-wise. Suit able for a variety of interior decorating schemes, New England Barnbord Panels are available in three dif ferent color shades: gray, brown and white. The hard- board panels are easy for a handy homeowner to in stall with either nails or adhesive direct to studs or any smooth, firm surface. Furring strips are necessary when application is over masonry walls. Once up, the pre-finished panels require little, if any, maintenance; waxing is never needed. The surface merely wipes clean with a damp cloth, thanks to a tough, baked-on finish that also protects the surface from damage. Acceptable for new construction or re modeling, with application direct to studs, the panels meet FHA requirements and also supply excellent re duction of sound transmis sion. In essence, these hard- board panels provide the best of two worlds -- the beauty and charm of an enduring past and the con venience and advantages of a modern wall material. But for most, the appeal of a rustic paneled room has to be measured, at least in part, by the memory of pleasant experiences. The cozy country inn; the hunt ing lodge warmed by a large fireplace and filled with the aroma of good cooking; or in our early years, the fes tive holidays at a grand parents' farm packed with all the wonder the country side had to offer. Weather-aged harnhoard look 3729 West Elm Street • McHeniy, Illinois 60050 RUSTIC-AMERICAN-DECOR ENTHUSIASTS searching the countryside for weather-aged barn siding with which tto panel their rooms are discovering it exists in the form of hardboard paneling made by the Abitibi Corporation, (billed New Eng land Rarnbord, the new, deeply-embossed panels have an authentic look and feel of real weather worn wood, lending historic charm to a family room or den. PATRIOTIC DECOR The approaching Ameri can Revolution Bicenten-. nial celebration in 1976 has apparently inspired many furniture manufacturers to begin offering furniture in Early American styling and colonial designs. _ LADDER SAFETY Many homeownersjire in jured, often seriously, when they do work around a house using a ladder. Make sure your ladder is on solid footing, and positioned so that it will not slip when you climb on it. "
