PAGE 14-McHENRY PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1974 Fully insulated home savings in " Much has been written about the present energy crisis. Shortages of gas, oil and electricity in various parts of the country have affected our ability to heat and cool our homes. Indeed, in some areas schools have been forced to close down several days a week in the cold winter months. The problem will continue for some time. While the individual homeowner obviously has no control over the fuel supply, he can insulate his home so as to get more out of his heating and cooling units whatever the fuel thfey use. He will be helping out in a time of need and he also will be cutting down on his own utility costs. Owners of older homes can have insulation blown into the walls from the outside. This is done by a local insulation applicator. Johns-Manville points out that another particularly r\ J.I. CASE I.H.C. CUB CADET G.E. ELEC-TRAK (No Gas-Up 'To 695 Miles Perl _GaJton_0f Water!!) Applicators can do the job but where the walls have not been finished off inside -- where the interior sides of the outer walls or roof decks are exposed--the homeowner can install fiber glass insulation himself. There are various types to choose from. Foil-faced insulation is particularly effective. The flanges of the insulation are stapled to the studs to form a snug vapor barrier. : j PrePanel is another form of economical fiber glass insulation that the home craftsman can easily install wherever furring strips will be used to carfy interior paneling. This fire-resistant insula tion fits between furring strips (16 inches on center) behind paneling, gypsum board or pegboard. It con forms to irregular spaces without need for edge cut ting and it can be tacked, stapled or glued to masonry or other walls. Another feature of fiber glass insulation, apart from its thermal qualities, is that it cuts down on noise. Drumming, the hollow thumping sound caused by the common cavity between paneling and existing walls, is reduced. Insulation wrapped around pipes not only helps protect from freezing in certain special ized situations but also re duces the sound of running water. This all adds up to the fact that fiber glass insula tion does a lot for a little. According to Johns-Man ville, the fully-insulated home can save the home owner as much as 40 per cent in heating costs and 30 percent in cooling ex pense in the course of a year. ITS EASY FOR THE HOME CRAFTSMAN to install fiber glass PrePanel Insulation behind paneling, gypsum board or pegboard. Fire-resistant fiber glass reduces heat transmission to make the home cooler in summer, warmer in winter.
