Dr. Griesbach To Leave City For New Program DR. PETER GRIESBACH "I have been offered an opportunity to help set up and implement a program for the handicapped in the state of New York - a program which, to my mind, offers the individual handicapped child a chance to attain his Oor her maximal potential. ^ "I have reached the age where I must take this opportunity to pioneer something really significant, or the chance to do so may not come again." Peter Griesbach, M.D., Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, and chief of the pediatric department at McHenry hospital, was making an announcement to two generations of his patients. "I have been very happy here. It has been gratifying to participate in the development of health care in this area over the past nineteen years. With the building of the Northern Illinois Medical center which McHenry hospital is planning, the citizens of this locale will soon have a regional medical facility." In 1955 when he arrived in McHenry, Dr. Griesbach had just completed his pediatric residency and joined three other specialists in founding the McHenry Medical Group, subsequently becoming charter staff members of the citizen- sponsored McHenry hospital. "Those were exciting days," Dr. (Jriesbach smiled. "Our plafre were almost unrealistic. Imagine bringing^ medical specialties to a small town, planning a hospital, instituting health programs and preventive medicine. I guess I was talked into tackling it by Dr. Gladstone, whose entusiasm was contagious." Dr. Griesbach doesn't seem sorry. In addition to serving as chief of pediatrics at McHenry hospital, he is consultant to the Special Education district of McHenry county, ,and is city health officer of the town of McHenry. He was also a board member and immediate past president of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry county, past president of the McHenry County Medical society, and for ten years was an elected member of the McHenry board of education (president for 2 years). "My wife Roslyn and I have raised our children here and have taken an active part in community life. We have strong bonds of friendship with the community. And I've had Ringwood News Church Plans Rummage Sale Next Weekend Let's all plan on being at the church next week working at the rummage sale getting our "Junk" ready for all those wonderful people looking for "Treasures". Bill Cristy and Katy Christopher had high scores. the joys and the heartaches that come with two decades of pediatric practice." His work with the mentally retarded is legendary, and his studies regarding learning disabilities were published in 1972 as part of a symposium on the subject sponsored by McHenry hospital and the McHenry County Medical society. "It is my interest in the handicapped child and my association with those who care for mentally retarded children which have brought me to the decision to leave my home in McHenry and my practice," IX*. Griesbach announced. The Monroe Developmental Services program which Dr. Griesbach will help to start is a multi-disciplinary approach 1<J helping the retarded. As chief of one of the four teams implementing the mandate of New York State's Department of Mental Hygiene,- Dr. Griesbach will employ the services of other pediatricians and internists, a psychologist, social workers, physical and occupational therapists and special-education teacher. "We will work with persons suspected of moderate, severe, and profound mental retardation from birth to 21 years of age," explained Dr. Griesbach. "As far as my personal contribution is concerned, I feel that my two decades of experience in the practice of pediatrics gives me a perspective which is important and practical." So - the same pioneering excitement which, brought Dr. Griesbach to McHenry to start a new and visionary project is taking him away. Informative Drug Program Presented Club SHERIFF ARTHUR TYRRELL Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell and Detective George Voska conducted an informative program on drug abuse and youth at a recent McHenry Lions ladies' night meeting. Over sixty McHenry Lions and their wives were present. Detective Voska, who works in the Drug and Narcotic division of the Sheriff's d e p a r t m e n t , r e l a t e d experiences in undercover work in McHenry county including the city of McHenry. He displayed drugs and items confiscated in their investigations. The men noted that McHenry county has one of the /-most active counters to drug traffic in that one department in the sheriff's office is devoted entirely to the control and abatement of drug traffic. The officers stated that there is extensive drug abuse in the McHenry area. However, it wa| felt that efforts to control the problem were t>ecoming effective here to a greater extent than in other area of Illinois. * u was strongly emphasized &iat there are many drugs available to youth locally. Many things sold as a particular drug such as mescaline, could, in fact, be a dangerous drug such as LSD. The speakers urged parents to know who their children are with and where they are. Confidence between parents and children was also stressed. >•" The officers felt that the real preventative to a child's dependence on drugs is a good home life. Detective Voska 1 stated, "Your kids may think they know about drugs, but they don't even know for sure what they are buying." For example, he said the grapevine story was to the effect that pyete and mescaline 444 NEWS J LINCOLN CLOVERLEAVES The Lincoln Cloverleaves held th9ir last meeting March 11 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church.
