Publicity Committee Label-reading consumers are already noticing a new look in many food labels at their supermarket, notes Pat Frank, McHenry county Extension adviser, Home Economics. Last year the Food and Drug administration established new regulations for labeling foods with nutrition information. The changeover has already begun although the regulations don't go into effect until January, 1975. Manufacturers of many foods, such as cereals, have often voluntarily included nutrition information on their labels. But under the new regulations, certain foods are required to have this information on their labels, Ms. Frank explains. These foods tnclude those with nutrients added by the manufacturer, such as fruit beverages with vitamin C added, and foods for which a nutritional claim is made, such as "contains more vitamin C than an orange." Some food processors and manufacturers have announced they will include nutrient labeling on all their foods, whether required or not. The FDA regulations include locating the required information in a standard format to the right of die label's main panel, she adds. The information includes serving size and the number of servings per container; the number of calories per serving; and the number of grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates per serving. The amount of protein, certain vitamins, calcium, and iron must be listed with the percentage of recommended amounts a serving will provide. The vitamins to be listed are: vitamin A, vitamin^, thiamin, Cisco, Nancy Koehler, Scot King, Judy Wright, Carla Dietz and Bill Lokay. Anyone with information should notify Mrs. Harold W. Hettermann, John street, McHenry. Other nutrients may be listed at the discretion of the manufacturer. The nutrition standard used in the new labeling is a different standard than the Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR) you have been accustomed to on food labels, Miss Frank notes. The new standard was based on a minimum amount of nutrients to prevent deficiency. When comparing old and new nutrition labels, you may find that a serving of cereal which gave you 33 percent of the MDR of a nutrient now only gives you 25 percent of the U.S. RDA. The nutrient content of the food has not' changed, Miss Frank stresses, only the nutrition standard has. The U.S. RDA includes a margin of safety for many people. How can you use the new nutrition labeling to advantage? To compare the nutritive value of different foods; to help compare prices of foods, using the "servings • per container" information; . and to help plan your meals to include nutritious foods. Nutrition labels may be| especially helpful for special: diets, she points out. According ; to the new regulations, stiane ' foods will list sodium, fat, anth, cholesterol content in addition to other required information/ Although the new labeling requirements will help food shoppers know more about the nutritive value of the food they buy and eat, good working knowledge of food-planning based on the basic four food groups is still needed.
