WASHINGTON, D.C. - Be hind closed doors in the Pen tagon in recent days the Air Force and cithers have man aged to prevent issuance of an order to test a promising, really cheap close air sup p o r t w e a p o n -- d e v e l o p e d whole ly with private funds. The reason seems to be, at least in part, fear that the p r i v a t e l y d e v e l o p e d c l o s e air support aircraft, known as the "Enforce t" will prove too good, too cheap and em barrass those who have con* stantly refused to procure even a few prototypes for <. years. The Air Force was given a look over two years ago; instead of seizing on this opportunity to equip the 6outh Vietnamese, it did nothing about it--even though it was the perfect weapon with which to Vietnamize the air war. Yet in the last two years tlie^TForCe has spent mil lions developing a much larg er close air support aircraft, which it says will do the job much better. But it costs four times as much and some think it not as suitable as the "En forcer." Pitching is what the Roy als lacked in 1973 when they nevertheless m a d e a good run at their western A.L. ti tle. McKeon says he's got a better staff this year. "Our pitching is very much advanced over last year," he said here recently as the Royals took on the White Sox in an exhibition game. "We're a shade ahead of last year, otherwise, in an overall conditioning. I'm very much impressed with Steve Busby and Marty Pat ten," he said. These two newly-acquired hurlers, with PaulSplittorff, A1 Fitzmorris and Nelson Briles, will have to come through if the Roy als win it. "Fitziporris is well ahead of last year," McKeon says. 0K MIUIE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Name the winner of the Doral-Eastern Golf Tour nament. 2. Who won the California 500? 3. Though he was told by the Marines this would be done, ten months of paper evaluation have produced nothing con crete. Many Senators and Con gressman are actively inter ested, in an effort to save the taxpayer money, but so far those in the Pentagon with their own pet programs have managed to prevent a fair test of the privately-de- veloped aircraft. (The Army, which doesn't have the "role" under present agree ments is interested.) Deputy Secretary William . Clements and his assistant, Dr. Malcolm Currie, are two who could help; they're pressed by the brass to do nothing and by many elected representatives of the people to grant a fair flight test for the privately-developed air weapon. \NlLi- THIS P0& £AT ANYTUIH&? yes, ANP HE'S especially FOND OF- CHlLPGEN. Kissing and colds ... It may be healthier to kiss than to shake hands. Or so one might conclude from studies on catching cold- conducted at the University o; Virginia School of Medicine, in Charlottesville. Researchers there found that the most common route of cold infection is from the hands to the nose and eyes, not from the mouth. Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the scien tists report that with colds caus ed by a particular virus -- the rhinovirus -- only 2 of 25 people released the germ in a sneeze or cough. But 4 out of 10 subjects carried traces of it on their hands. The virus is transferred from the hands to other surfaces --nylon, Dacron, Formica, plastic, stainless steel, or someone else's skin--where it can survive for as long as three hours. To prevent colds, J. Owen Hend- ley, M.D., leader of the Univer sity of Virginia study, says: Wash your hands frequently, don't rub your eyes, and don't pick your nose. Smoking and heart attacks... Smoking has a direct link to conditions that lead to heart at tacks, says a New England physi cian. The results of studies conduct ed by Peter H. Levine, M.D., of the Tufts-New England Medical Center indicate that smoking only one standard, filter-tipped cigar ette uas a marked effect on the blood clotting mechanism. What the cigarette actually does, the doctor says, is reduce the reactivity of the blood platel ets, one of the cellular compo nents of the blood needed to in itiate the clotting process. In other words, within five minutes after smoking a single standard cigarette, there is a marked increase in the platelet's ability to aggregate or to form plugs. This increase can event ually lead to blood clotting in the arteries, a condition called arterial thrombosis, which has long been recognized as a pre cursor of heart attacks, strokes, and blood vessel diseases. "It has long been known," says Dr. Levine, "that there is a sta tistical correlation between ciga rette smoking and arterial throm bosis, but this is the first time, to my knowledge, that anyone has shown, through controlled stud ies, that there is a direct, physi cal correlation."
